NHL 2019-20 #1: Where Toronto Plans To Win Without Playing Defense.

Why the literal reseeding for the first round? Technically we are now in the actual "Playoffs" while the qualifiers were just part of the "postseason", but it seems so random to drop 9-12 from the rankings. It's not like everyone will receive a new 1-4 seed in the second round.

Not sure what you mean. The playoffs starts with the seeding after the round robin and knockout garbage, so this is the only playoff seeding.

But I'm confused anyway -- don't they reseed every round like a college tourney anyway? I didn't think the N had been fixed bracket for a long time. So there has always been reseeding.

But to be fair my interest in pro hockey has barely registered above noise for 30 years so I could be misremembering.

College is a fixed bracket, for the NHL the first round itself is "forced" in that I think they require two entrants for every division or something silly like that, but after the 1st round I think it's then fixed?

The qualifying round statistics count as playoff stats and a playoff appearance, so it's a weird grey area where it's not part of the official Stanley Cup Playoffs, but it's still the postseason.

Montreal won the qualifying round as a 12 seed. They are now an 8 seed for the first round. If they win, they won't be reseeded as a 4 seed for the second round, they'll keep the 8 seed the rest of the way. Just an odd quirk where one part of the playoffs counts as the playoffs but isn't technically the playoffs.

I thought they reseeded throughout but I tuned out when they started that top 3 in division crap.

How is it that Arizona can be competitive? Their passing is REALLY bad. Like terrible way off bad. Both on the passing and receiving side- just watched a power play, and they could not do a thing.

They know I am coming. They are getting ready for the Cup runs.

Calgary goes up 3-0, loses 7-3.

The Dallas Stars would like to thank the Calgary Flames for their participation in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

While I was watching some of that, it was interesting to see how lifeless the Caps looked. And it made me think a little about this tournament. In the past, players have always made it a point of pride that they sacrificed so much to win the Cup- mostly physically, but a lot mentally to win 16 games like that.

Seems to me, this tournament is really focusing on the mental sacrifice the teams are making. Not taking into account the players who are choosing not to play for their or their family's safety (and I totally get that, think it's 100% the right thing to do)- the teams seem to be having issues with the mental struggle to keep playing under these conditions of no fans and isolated from the real world. AZ looked horrible against CO, and the Caps were mailing it in at the end. I even wonder about the Leafs, Oilers and Pens in terms of their play. So the mental game in keeping focused and ready to play every other night is turning out to be a major challenge. Which is pretty interesting.

BTW, in other series where teams have gotten eliminated- that was far less clear- Columbus played really hard most of the time, Carolina was strong up until the last game vs the Bruins, etc....

I agree with you completely. The Isles came to play; the Caps looked put out. Wilson (f-ck him with a rusty skate blade) and Ovi worked their as-ses off; everybody else was thinking about getting back to his mistress.

By definition once we get to the conference SF we'll be dealing with teams that have passed through that Darwinian filter.

So I played my easily offended wife the Milbury video and she didn’t think it was offensive at all. Five minutes later that Sam Adams wedding commercial came on and she said how much it bothers her. There is a crowd of folks out there who desperately want something to be upset over and the Milburu video is the best they can do at the minute.

It was a dumb comment with no relevance to the game at hand, though I agree that it wasn't as bad as what Roenick said that got him (rightfully) fired.
