NHL 2019-20 #1: Where Toronto Plans To Win Without Playing Defense.

Well for anybody with a strong stomach we could use all hands on deck this time. Tampa's transition and speed were insane on Labor Day. I have no idea what we're gonna do to get back in this.

Time to initiate the usual Trotz strategies against teams with superior talent - hooking, holding, and general obstruction.

This has to be a mistake. According to the official boxes from the game on NBC, the final 34 shots Florida took in game one were on net. Zero blocks. Zero misses.

So what you're saying is the NHL has always been the dumbest league in sports?

There were the organizers of the Caribbean Cup who decided that a golden goal in extra time would be worth two goals. Due to tiebreakers, this resulted in a situation where Barbados scored an own goal to try to force extra time, which lead to Grenada trying to score in either goal to win or lose in regulation.

Another interesting format was the CCHA tournament when Alaska-Fairbanks was an affiliate member. Their games didn't count in the standings, so they were technically the last seed, but since they were actually a decent team, the tournament had a draft format in the first round. So the first seed got to pick their opponent, then the second seed, and so on. Alaska was drafted last or second to last every time, so it created some funky brackets where the 5 or 6 seed would be playing the 12 in the first round while the 1 seed would play the 11.

That was suboptimal, albeit barely. We know how to beat them now. Whether we can execute to win 4 of the next 5, well...

Fun fact I saw on r/hockey: With the Game Two win the Vegas Golden Knights now have more playoff wins than Winnipeg/Atlanta, Florida, and...

The Minnesota Wild.

Also saw a stat that that Vegas has more playoff wins than every other NHL team since 2017-18 (their inaugural year).

I'll bet they're getting close to the entire city history for all Winnipeg's teams. Unless you count the Victorias, who were amazing.

That doesn’t seem right given Boston.

I think Boston and Vegas are tied at 25. Boston lost 4-1 in the second round in two of the three seasons. That's five wins per season, coupled with their 15 wins last year.

Vegas won 13 in their first year, 3 last year, and now 9 nine this year.
