Re: Yale Hockey 2010-2011 thread

What impact is the mile-high altitude likely to have on our guys, if any? Will they have a day to acclimate?

We are more than a mile-high. Denver is a mile-high, but like almost all things in this state, Colorado Springs beats Denver in altitude too. Official altitude for Colorado Springs is 6,012 feet. Having said that it has been my opinion for a number of years now that the altitude thing is overrated.

Yale should be just fine, and it should have little impact on the game. The Air Force Academy is even higher in altitude and by Sunday could affect Yale a bit more playing that game. I've just seen way to many teams come into Colorado Springs and play their best hockey in the third period of the second game. For hockey, it is overrated IMO.

Definitely affects some guys more than others, but there is certainly a difference. When skating there, you feel short of breath quicker. At least that has been my experience. A lot of teams arrive on Thursday and skate, though I am not sure if that's Yale's plan (it probably is). That helps somewhat, but not entirely. That said, does it have that big of an effect on the game? Who knows!

I have seen a number of weekends where an opponent is completely worn down by the third period of games, but definitely less so in recent years. The Olympic ice is a different world for most teams, and we have watched opponents wear down when CC has been able to play their fast skating game. The teams who wear down most are the teams whose d-men don't have a lot of speed. I do not think it will affect this Yale team, as they seem very well conditioned and of course their speed is going to allow them to play well on the big ice.

Any update on the Anna Liffeys feed? If not, anyone have any experience with the computer feeds, worth the seven bucks?

Re: Yale Hockey 2010-2011 thread

Can't wait for tonight's game. This is the game I have most looked forward to this year because I saw Yale enough last year to know how good and how fun to watch they are. Tonight's game will be a huge test for this young CC team. Especially a d-corps that has been inconsistent so far this season. Good luck to both teams, and let's hope for a great game!

Re: Yale Hockey 2010-2011 thread

I'll join you in hoping for a great game tonight.

And if you're in the New Haven area, make sure you join us at Anna Liffey's for the broadcast of the game.

Go Bulldogs!

Yale again looked great tonight.

Without doubt, the most pleasant surprise of this young season is the play of Rondeau. We knew the offense would be there, but he appears to be gaining real confidence in goal.

Sorry I missed you guys at Anna Liffey's- how did the feed work out?

Re: Yale Hockey 2010-2011 thread

Excellent job by Licwinko on the feed, the picture was semi-good and we even had major league sound! Looked like about 10-20 folks there just to see the game. Nice meeting you all this evening, the Guinness was also a bonus! BTW Yale did not miss a step tonight, CC seemed to gain some momentum as the game wore on but Rondeau and the defense played superbly. The Olympic size ice really suits Yales quick tempo.

Re: Yale Hockey 2010-2011 thread

Yale is every bit as good as I told all my CC friends they were. I'll post more detail after the Yale vs. AFA game tomorrow night, when I've had a chance to see Yale two nights in a row. For now, I will say that based on this one game, I agree with those of you who say this team is even better than last year. CC skated well, but Yale exploited every single weakness this young Tigers team has. Yale's d was absolutely stunning tonight, and they are one of the best teams I have ever watched in terms of positioning. Rondeau looked very sharp and if he keeps playing like that, this is a FF team and a serious contender for the National Championship. Congrats on the win.

That was a lot of fun. Mega thanks to Liffey's for hosting and keeping that band from playing until the game was over.

The owner said we could do it again whenever and some folks were talking about Cornell, but then I saw it's this coming Friday. I think I'm gonna pass on this game, but the owner was really cool, so if you're interested give him a call.

Great game by the Bulldogs, hopefully they saved something for the Academy tonight!

They'll be just fine. AFA is not very good right now Although the one time I have seen them in person so far this year, they won 12-0! But that is one of only two wins for them.

That said, AFA has had a remarkable ability to keep games against good teams quite close over the years. I rack it up to their speed, intelligence, and their discipline. They won't generally beat themselves like CC has done a few times this year. I'll be at the game tonight, and I just hope AFA can keep it interesting.

Re: Yale Hockey 2010-2011 thread

That was one of the worst losses I can remember for Yale. Hopefully, the guys will shake it off and come back hard next week.

Re: Yale Hockey 2010-2011 thread

This is my quote from the Yale running circles thread

Very poor showing by Yale, so much for Malcolm, continuity in goal will continue to be our achilles heel until Coach Allain can trust one goalie (maybe never). The coach also needs to find his voice to call a timeout when needed.

and this for the locals,

I will add that they played a great first period and seemed to tire exponentially as the game wore on, Cahill took another misconduct at the end, I guess he is our hot head this year. Malcolm looked good for a while, but the cheap second goal rattled him I think.

Re: Yale Hockey 2010-2011 thread

Yale wasn't as good tonight as they were last night, obviously, and I'm sure this is a game that Yale wants back. But as I mentioned earlier, AFA has a tendency of keeping games close against good teams. Think about their tournament appearances, including a win against Michigan.

It was a very entertaining game tonight. AFA came out with speed and discipline, and as always, hard work. They also were hitting a fair amount. Less talented teams win with hard work, and for the last several years Air Force has been able to do this. Plain and simple, Air Force worked their tails off all game, never quit, and played a pretty much flawless game (which is the only way they could have beaten Yale) and also got some fantastic goaltending from Freshman Jason Torf, and also a bit of puck-luck in the third period. Honestly, Yale also looked pretty worn down for the last 10-15 minutes of the game. I think some of that is playing up-tempo hockey at altitude for two nights in a row, and some of it is that AFA made them work for every play tonight.

Don't feel too bad about this one, guys. Ask CC, Denver, Michigan, Minnesota, Vermont, Miami, etc. how tough AFA has been to play against over the past several seasons. It happens. I still come away from these two games quite impressed by Yale, and I would be shocked if they weren't at least a Frozen Four team this year.

Thanks for the pity-post, JS.

I'm just hoping a tough loss like that keeps the boys focused down the road.

Re: Yale Hockey 2010-2011 thread

yale needs to stay focused this year. They have a great team and if they can get up for every game, big or small, they could be one of the best in the nation. Just need to stay focused on the the prize, which this year should be winning the whole thing.
