World Soccer XXXI: Golden Generation?

US loses to Panama 1-0 at the Nations League Finals.

So, they changed the coach and still got the same result.

At least Berhalter had the excuse of being a man down for 60 minutes.

Maybe it's the players...
Down 0-4 to Switzerland at halftime and about to lose their fourth match in a row, all at home.

Maybe, it's the players.

Focusing on the actual soccer at the Club World Cup, Miami, in midseason, being 0-0 60 minutes in versus Al-Ahly is... not a good sign.

(As a Seattle fan I'm dreading the impending beatdowns)

Given recent results, hopefully tonight isn't much of a ballgame against T&T.

Also, why are the Saudis invited? I thought the Qatar invites were to give them some competitive matches for the World Cup (well, and $$$) but Saudi Arabia isn't hosting for another nine years.

Check who CONCACAF's sponsors are and you'll find your answer to that question.

More bad news for MLS at the Club World Cup as Seattle is down 0-2 at halftime to Brazil's Botafogo.

And this game is the Sounders "winnable" game.

Seattle nearly comes back on Botafogo but loses 2-1.

Doesn't get any easier for Seattle, they just faced the current South American champions, next game is against Atletico Madrid before playing the current European Champions PSG.

LAFC loses to Chelsea 2-0.

Not a bad result considering Chelsea’s total salary spend is about 20 times what LAFC spends.

Pivoting some of the CWC discussion from the Dump thread to here.

It is sad and frustrating how much the influence of Dump has ruined the tournament because there really is potential and the first few games have shown that. The games, outside of Bayern-Auckland and PSG vs anyone, have been competitive and they’ve gotten high attention from the media in the non-Euro countries.

And the idea isn’t a terrible thing. For as much as it’s derided as a “cash grab”, an adage that could be used to describe basically any tournament, it is in the best interest of the game to have a tournament like this, UEFA and the European clubs having a virtual monopoly on the club game is not a healthy thing. Granted, handing that power to FIFA, especially in its current form, is not exactly ideal.

With River Plate’s (Argentina) win over Urawa (Japan) today, the six CONMEBOL clubs are unbeaten with 3 wins and 3 draws.

The wins were Botafogo over Seattle, the aforementioned River over Urawa, and Flamengo (Brazil) over ES Tunis (Tunisia). The draws were Palmeiras (Brazil) vs Porto (Portugal), Boca Juniors (Argentina) vs Benfica (Portugal), and Fluminense (Brazil) vs Dortmund (Germany).

Hopefully, more people will believe me when I say that the Brazilian league is somewhere in the 5-7th best league in the world range (and Boca and River are in that range too).

Inter Miami pulls off the upset, beating Porto (currently 18th in UEFA’s club rankings) 2-1.

It’s the first time ever a UEFA has been beaten in regulation by a non-European team at the Club World Cup.
