World Soccer XXXI: Golden Generation?

Norway is set to become the first country to abandon VAR after 19 of its 32 clubs voted Wednesday to scrap video refereeing in the country's top division.

Following a four-month consultation period involving clubs, players and supporters' groups, clubs from Norway's first and second tier voted on whether to scrap VAR, and the outcome of the vote led to a recommendation that the Norwegian Football Federation (NFF) rubber-stamp the result.

The NFF is expected to make a final decision in March, although sources told ESPN that the governing body could yet overrule the vote.

Honestly, Germany could do this too without much fuss.

Their rights for highlights are so restricted that nobody in this country sees the highlights for 2 days unless they pay €30 a month so the anger about a missed call would only come on Tuesday and everyone forgets the game by then.

The NASL’s antitrust lawsuit against US Soccer and MLS has gone to trial, let’s check on the proceedings:

Cosmos Owner and NASL Chair Rocco Commisso admits he used burner account to attack US Soccer and MLS online.

Monday was the ninth day of the jury trial where NASL seeks $170 million in damages from USSF and MLS. (Damages awarded are tripled under antitrust law.) On Monday, the trial’s ninth day, MLS’s outside counsel read out the most incendiary tweets uncovered during discovery. The NASL side had tried to keep them sealed.

“If NASL lawsuit continues, the skeletons will come out of the closet,” Commisso agreed during testimony he tweeted from Global Soccer Fan on December 16, 2017. “USSF has been raped by the Harvey Weinstein of US Soccer – Garber, who with MLS owners and Gulati, have engineered a Madoff-type scam on all of American soccer.”

In actual MLS news, the league and Apple announced some updates to their broadcasts and the Season Pass. MLS Season Pass will now be available through DirectTV and Comcast and their associated apps.

Big news is there’ll now be a marquee Sunday night game available on AppleTV+ ala baseball’s Friday night game.

In a not shocking development, the verdict is in for the NASL antitrust lawsuit against MLS and the USSF and the jury found MLS and the USSF not guilty.

That sound is the sound of thousands of bot Twitter accounts crying out in agony.

According to the jury verdict in the case, the NASL failed to establish that either D1 or D2 soccer leagues were "relevant markets", a critical part for establishing any antitrust case.

So, a bit of US Soccer history: The lawyer representing the NASL was Jeffrey Kessler, a renowned sports union lawyer. Kessler represented MLS players in the Fraser v Major League Soccer antitrust lawsuit, a lawsuit that dragged on for 6 years and cost MLS players key time in forming their players union and negotiating time for a collective bargaining agreement. The main reason why the players lost the suit? Kessler failed to establish a "relevant market" for soccer (MLS argued that because it was a single entity it could not conspire against itself and that the players were not harmed because they could freely go to other countries and play) and used expert testimony from Roger Noll from Stanford.

The expert whom Kessler used in the NASL case to try to prove a "relevant market"? Roger Noll from Stanford.

US Soccer has released a new Referee Abuse Policy.

It is specifically for youth and amateur soccer but holy shit! In some of the examples there’s stuff that is tagged as 2-3 game suspension that likely wouldn’t even be a yellow card now. Also, if it’s against an official who’s a minor the punishment is automatically tripled.

I have a feeling a lot of people are going to FAFO with this.

Need that across every sport. But besides soccer and hockey there are too many different bodies in the US for all the other sports to make that work.

Yep. Its a solid plan, but just can't be implemented elsewhere.

The main issue is that a majority of Youth Baseball and Basketball in the US is played under "for profit" entities, where officials are a necessary evil. The are a one way street for business. They can only push customers away, but will never bring any in.

I’m honestly skeptical of its implementation for soccer at the adult amateur level. There’s stuff in the first two levels that would be a borderline yellow card that are now not only expected to be a red card for abusive language but also a minimum 2 or even 4 game suspension, that’s a huge jump. It’s a great plan but it’s not going to go over well with some people and it’s largely going to be up to state and regional level administrators to implement this stuff. At the end of the day, it’ll be interesting to see the reaction to the inevitable drop in player registration numbers.

CONCACAF Champions Cup has started. Currently Monterrey of Mexico is playing Forge FC from Canada (Hamilton specifically because apparently the Canadian Premier League not only has to have the most generic team names they also can't have the city name in them) in 22 degree weather on a turf field that is undoubtedly frozen, to the point that this game would likely be abandoned in most places but this is CONCACAF so they just YOLO it.

On that note, the other CPL team in the competition Cavalry FC of Calgary will play their home game tomorrow in Victoria BC because playing a soccer game outdoors in Calgary in February would be a crime against humanity.

On the plus side, no turf toe since the coefficient of friction is naught point diddly squat!

Speaking of CONCACAF, I just had a sobering thought of the very distinct possibility of ICE agents patrolling the stadium at the next Mexico friendly or CONCACAF Nations League Final and arresting people.

Imagine the reaction if that happens this summer during the Gold Cup and Club World Cup?

I mean they speak Spanish, so by the current criteria being used by this admin…

I’m sure someone at FIFA isn’t happy with Cheeto Von FukStick being the face for next year.

At FIFA? Infantino was at the inauguration. They love dictators.

Now, at US Soccer there's probably a few not happy.

CONCACAF update: Calvary FC of Calgary made history by not only becoming the first CPL team to win a match in the CCC but also win a match against a LigaMX club by beating Pumas 2-1.

Now, on one hand it is funny to see a LigaMX club five games into their season lose to a team who hasn’t played in three months. On the other hand, most people know that Pumas didn’t even send four starters to the match and are highly likely to win the second leg by four or five goals.

Final from the CONCACAF U-17 Championship: US Virgin Islands - 0, USA - 22.

Yes. 22.

Chase Adams of the Columbus Crew had 10 goals.
