Either this was something that came up very recently or they missed something during the mandatory health screenings that have been required since Marc Vivian Foe died at the 2003 Confederations Cup.

(Or UEFA doesn’t do the health screenings like FIFA does)

Unless they mandate an echocardiogram it can be easy to miss cardiac risk factors for sudden cardiac death...EKGs also miss their fair share of arrhythmias (or risk for a deadly arrhythmia).

Would these factors be missed over several exams?

(Not trying to be snarky, am genuinely curious. He’s been transferred to two different major teams (Ajax and Inter Milan) and almost certainly had thorough exams looking for this sort of thing.)

Team doc said he was gone before he was able to be resuscitated. Wow

Yeah, it was extremely scary. Until the photographs emerged of him being conscious when getting carted off the field, I thought he had passed. As stated before, it was one of the most upsetting moments I have ever had watching soccer...or any sport for that matter.

Would be cool if St. Kitts pulled off the upset, but not expecting anything.

Technically Cura?ao are the favorites against Panama going by FIFA rankings, but it’s only by two points and two spots.
First games were yesterday:
St Kitts 0-4 El Salvador
Haiti 0-1 Canada
Panama 2-1 Cura?ao

Funny reading the Canadian fans complaining about “playing on the worst pitch ever”. Lol, you Canucks have a lot to learn…

Without knowing what testing is routinely done in this particular situation...yes it can be missed. If it is an intermittent arrhythmia you may only catch it when it is happening and I would doubt they routinely do long term recording. I also would doubt they do a structural exam on every player.

Without giving too many details, I know people at Cleveland Clinic who see people from basically any league you can imagine. Often they have life threatening heart issues that are found very late, randomly, or only after an event like the above happened. Truly scary stuff!

Tottenham, one of the clubs Eriksen played for, had their cardiologist speaking on things either today or yesterday. It is indeed scary, I worry about an incident like this happening on a game I’m reffing.

Consider El Salvador through to the Octogonal with that result, especially with the second leg at home.

If Haiti and Curacao can make it through, it will be an interesting final round.

If you get CPR certified (if not already) it can go a long way if an emergency like that occurs.

Yup, looks like the first match for the US in the Ocho will be El Salvador.

Canada v Haiti will be an interesting second leg. Canada still can’t play at home so they’re playing in Chicago (well, Bridgeview now that no one is using that stadium). Canada should go through but I never doubt their ability to blow it.
