Sure Portugal didn't correct their behavior, but what did any teams made of decent human beings do?
Neither did the Dutch, you know the team that had 8 yellows and a red in the 2010 Final.

Edit: 2006 (and 2010 to some extent) was kind of a perfect storm where referees were being instructed to have strict enforcement of the Laws while teams had moved to more aggressively defensive styles using defensive central mids to clear space for playmakers (think people like Gattuso for Pirlo, Makelele for Zidane, Costinha for Figo).

The SKC-Minnesota game got moved to Thursday night because, I’m not kidding, the Ravens-Steelers game got moved to Tuesday and Fox wanted something to fill the time slot.

So the winner of that game will now only get 3 days rest before the conference final.

They didn't learn from it because everyone supporting them got pissy and complained and I guess acting like toddlers won out.

Enforce the rules and if they don't learn then eff them they can lie in the bed they made. I mean is the alternative garbage we're seeing otherwise really that much more palatable?

c.f. flopping / writhing

"Embellishment" penalties were made for soccer.

Well, obviously things are palatable enough for people to watch.

I will add in a post from over on BigSoccer that does give the referees actions a bit of perspective (which I hadn’t really thought to convey here because... well it’s a bit “inside baseball”)
Also, while we shouldn't over-state the suspension/appeals problem, we equally shouldn't under-state what I think is the real issue: survival instincts in the moment.

Chilowicz knows exactly what happens to that match if he pulls a second red card on Nani or another Orlando player. Almost all of us have been there or in similar situations. If that match goes to 11 v 9, it's probably going to 11 v 8 or worse. Orlando's behavior was unhinged already--tossing their captain to put them down two men in a must-win playoff match where the score is 2-1... it's a nightmare for any referee.

So there is an instict to just "get through it." I think it's human nature, honestly. The concious decision to not deal with ref assault (or to turn red cards for it into yellow cards) and blatant dissent that would prompt a 2CT isn't because of what PRO or MLS will do after with your decisions... it's about what would happen for the next 30 minutes.

Because I didn’t feel like posting it last night: Minnesota beat Sporting KC 3-0 to advance. Conference Finals now set.

Columbus v New England on Sunday.
Seattle v Minnesota on Monday.

Go Seattle (sorry, Loons). As always, everything east of the Mississippi River in the MLS can fall into the ocean.
