I knew the Philippines was going to be Team USA B but 18 out of 23 being US born is crazy.

Well that explains why there are so many McDaniels and Harrisons and Beards on the team.

That’s Olympic softball levels of team building. At the last Tokyo games Mexico was entirely US-born players and Italy only had three or four actually from Italy.

Someone mentioned there’s around 50 American born players not playing for the USWNT in the tournament. Even Switzerland had one.

Inter Miami spends forty minutes getting dominated by Cruz Azul, out possessed, has a player subbed off due to a possible ACL tear. Scores a goal to go up 1-0.

Not sure why that took three minutes to decide if they have the semi-automated offsides. Unless I'm misremembering how quick they were ruled in the men's WC. But at least the delay benefited the US.

I wasn't up in arms like many seemed to be after the US game. It would've been nice to see them finish better and take advantage of their height more, but it's always a crapshoot when a team packs 11 in the box. It would've been fun to see another 13-0 game like they did against Thailand, but based on other scores that might not be the way this tournament works anymore.

Canada tied Nigeria. England needed a penalty to beat Haiti. Sweden ended up getting the win against South Africa, but it certainly wasn't easy as they had to get a goal in stoppage time. And then France tied Jamaica. We'll see what Germany does against Morocco, but right now the only teams who have taken care of business better than the US to open the tournament have been Japan and Spain.

Over the weekend the Saudis offered €300 million for Kylian Mbappe.

Today PSG have accepted.

It is now up to Mbappe and the Saudis to agree to terms. One (unconfirmed) report has the Saudis offering him €700 million for one season, at which point he is free to join Real Madrid.

Watching Leagues Cup, the MLS v Liga MX tournament going on right now, it’s fascinating to finally get a look at MLS as a whole versus Liga MX as a whole. As expected, the results are mixed. Austin losing to a bad Juarez team was not good (though par for the course for Austin). Minnesota giving Puebla a 4-0 beating was good though.

We haven’t gotten the real heavyweights in yet though. Chivas, Club America, Tigres and Monterrey have yet to play.

Personal power rankings through (almost) the first round of games:

1. Germany
2. Spain
3. Japan
4. USA
5. Brazil
6. Netherlands
7. Sweden
8. England
9. Denmark
10. New Zealand
11. Switzerland
12. Australia
13. France
14. Italy
15. Canada

New Zealand could clinch a knockout round berth tonight with a win and a Switzerland win/draw against Norway.
