Oh look, something bad happened with the USMNT and someone shows up…

Posted this a few pages back but it got lost in another discussion. We’re now just a week out from the Women’s World Cup starting.

USWNT (with NED, POR, and Vietnam) is in the group of death in Group E by average ranking (1, 9, 21, and 32), but that’s only because Vietnam is not a disastrously ranked fourth team like other groups have. One of only two groups with two top ten teams, but the other is France and Brazil (5 and 8) who get to be paired with 43rd Jamaica and 52nd Panama.

By median ranking the group of death is Group D with England, Denmark, China, and Haiti. That’s 4, 13, and 14 along with 54. No other group has three teams under 20th, though Group E just barely misses, as does Group B with Canada 7th, Australia 10th, Ireland just outside at 22nd and the best African squad in Nigeria at 40th.

I didn’t realize how bad the time zones were for this because the first two US games are scheduled for 9pm, but most games are between 1-6am each day.

I don’t know if there can really be a “group of death”, the gap between the top 10-15 countries in the women’s game and the rest is just enormous. Maybe there’ll be surprises but it’s hard to look at a group with the USWNT and the Netherlands and think either of the other two will advance.

Yea, it's rough. The 12-14 hour time difference will do that in Australia. New Zealand isn't much better with the 16 hour difference.

Speaking of the time zones, I wonder when the rights bids for 2030 and beyond are? Because I don’t think Fox has the rights to 2027 and that tournament would be part of that package.

Also be interesting to see if ESPN puts in a competitive bid considering how much soccer content they’ve gutted over the last year or two.

True, there’s no group where all four are in contention. If you’re looking for groups with three teams with a shot to move on, you’ve probably got

Group A - Norway, Switzerland and NZ. Philippines gets to raise everyone’s goal differential.
Group D - England, Denmark and China. Haiti gets it run up by everyone.
Group H - Germany, South Korea, and Colombia. Morocco has a sad debut.

Depending on how deep Europe truly is, then maybe group B and E with Ireland and Portugal, but I would still expect Canada and the Aussies, and the US and Dutch to make it out fairly easily.

I think this tournament and the next are going to be real growing pains tournaments. It’s a good thing and hopefully the level begins to rise in the women’s game, but the group stages are going to be a rough watch.

Congratulations to Mexico on their 9th Gold Cup title.
Unsurprisingly, this happened.

Jesus Ferreira did win the Golden Boot.

Inter Miami introduced some guy named Messi yesterday as well.

Leagues Cup between MLS and Liga MX starts Friday with a match between Cruz Azul and Miami.

Elo models for Women’s World Cup.

Some of these are just absurd. There’s 11 teams with a 90+% chance of advancing past the group stage. The US is listed as 52% chance of making the final.

Ronaldo clowns MLS, says Saudi league is already better than it.

I guess, if you give everyone a billion dollars, of course you will get a lot of players.

I wonder why Messi buys real estate when he lives rent free in Cristiano's head (there's only one Ronaldo and he's from Brazil).

It’s interesting looking at the contrasting stories of the Women’s World Cup between Australia and New Zealand.

Australia seems to mostly or totally sold out for their matches while New Zealand seems to be practically begging people to buy tickets.

I know New Zealand is not big on soccer but dang.

FTFY.

Sydney population = 5.297M
New Zealand population = 5.123M
I mean, they’re only using four stadiums and two of them are under 30k capacity.

And it didn’t stop New Zealand from setting attendance records for the rugby and cricket Women’s World Cups last year.

It should be a bit worrying considering they have two of the bigger draws in the US and Japan on their side of the draw.
