The USSF’s independent investigators report into the NWSL was released today.

Yeah, it’s bad.

The report also provided more details as to how Riley was allowed to continue coaching in the NWSL, despite being fired for cause by the Thorns following the aforementioned abuse allegations. Former NWSL commissioner Jeff Plush, in an email to then USSF president Sunil Gulati, USSF CEO Dan Flynn and USSF general counsel Lisa Levine, conveyed his understanding that Thorns president of soccer Gavin Wilkinson told the Western New York Flash that Riley was "put in a bad position by the player," and that Wilkinson would "hire [Riley] in a heartbeat."

ESPN previously reported that Wilkinson had given the Flash a positive job referral for Riley. He was hired by the club in early 2016. Although Plush, Gulati, Flynn and Levine all had received Shim's detailed complaint -- and Plush and Levine received a 2015 Thorns report -- none appeared to provide the Flash with additional information.

ESPN also reported that later, when Riley was in contention for the managerial position for the U.S. women's national team, Thorns owner Merritt Paulson told North Carolina Courage counterpart Steve Malik it would be "a good idea" for Riley to withdraw. The Yates report details how following "at least fourteen conversations among eleven people at the Federation, the League, the Portland Thorns, and the NC Courage, Riley publicly withdrew himself from consideration." But during those conversations, USSF chief legal officer Lydia Wahlke never conveyed a report that Riley had a "relationship with a Portland player to the League, others at the Federation, or the Courage.

The report found that three organizations -- the Chicago Red Stars, the Portland Thorns and Racing Louisville -- didn't fully cooperate with the Yates investigation, despite public statements to the contrary.

"The Portland Thorns interfered with our access to relevant witnesses and raised specious legal arguments in an attempt to impede our use of relevant documents," the report read. "Racing Louisville FC refused to produce documents concerning Christy Holly and would not permit witnesses (even former employees) to answer relevant questions regarding Holly's tenure, citing non-disclosure and non-disparagement agreements it signed with Holly. The Chicago Red Stars unnecessarily delayed the production of relevant documents over the course of nearly nine months."

The scary part is if the USMNT qualifies for 2018 Gulati, or someone like him, likely gets reeelected and this whole mess goes on for longer.

The Timbers Army responds.

They’re, uh, PO’d:
At this point and for the foreseeable future, the leadership of the 107IST, Timbers Army, and Rose City Riveters are suspending relations with the Portland Timbers and Thorns Football Club while the leadership team includes Merritt Paulson, Mike Golub, and Gavin Wilkinson. With playoffs approaching, yes, it means that game days might look different. It’s time to build a bonfire.

PO’d enough to use a Seattle chant in their statement!

I think even a Portland hater like yourself can agree the problem was never our fans.

Is the cultural mismatch between fans and owners greater in any other team? It's like Sunderland being owned by a Thatcherite.
Oh I can agree the fans have never been the problem here (outside of an unwillingness to take real action until now), I’m just a little surprised they’d use that specific phrase. Although they probably did it specifically to PO Paulson.

As for cultural mismatch, Columbus (the Crew fans and the Haslams) and Man U come to mind.

Looking at the EPL+ table a few items stood out:

1. Manchester United at 5th but with a GD of -2. They are also the only team in the Top 6 with more than 2 L
2. Newcastle at 6th with a GD of +8 but somehow have managed 6 D out of 10 played
3. Liverpool at 8?
4. And from the lowest league Wrexham in 2nd, 1 point behind Notts a team they lost to 1-0 a few weeks back

The dudes on the soccer show on XM this a.m. were bemoaning how most of the US players are idle going into the WC. Pulisic isn't getting minutes and the others are on MLS squads that potted out. Does anybody think this matters? And why isn't Pulisic playing? Lingering injuries or just not good enough?

Bad club situation. He’s good enough but the manager just doesn’t like him.

The MLS players being out of the playoffs isn’t necessarily a bad thing, rest isn’t a terrible idea, and they have a camp starting soon anyway.

Which show was it?

SiriusXM FC, the dude who used to do the morning show with Georgio Chinaglia. I think he might actually own the station -- he seems like a used car salesman. This guy.

Stillitano? Lol ok, that explains a lot.

Charlie Stillitano is the head of Relevant Sports, the company that promotes those International Champions Cup friendlies (aka pay us thousands to watch Euro teams half try against each other) and the company that’s sued (and failed) the USSF multiple times because the USSF won’t let Relevant host La Liga matches in the US.

He has always struck me as PT Barnum. His show with Chinaglia was awesome because Georgio was nigh on The Most Interesting Man in the World. But otherwise, Charlie always seems like a cross between a panderer and a seedy salesman in Glengary Glen Ross.

Women’s World Cup draw was (very) earlier this morning.

US drawn into Group E with the Netherlands, Vietnam, and the winner of Playoff Group A (either Portugal, Cameroon, or Thailand). The US and the Netherlands of course played in the final last time but, with Australia and New Zealand cohosting, the Dutch (ranked 8th) got dropped to Pot 2.

And if you thought the USA v Thailand blowout last time was bad, prepare for more of those this time around! Spain and Japan versus 81st ranked Zambia should be fun in Group C. France and Brazil versus the Playoff Group C winners (Paraguay, Papua New Guinea, Taiwan, or Panama) should be good too.

Preliminary plans for MLS on Apple TV are out.

Big thing is the move to consistent windows on Saturdays and Wednesdays. All matches are planned to kick off at 7:30 local. Apple wants to have a big pregame show into a 5-6 hour whiparound show followed by a postgame show.

Really looking forward to seeing a broadcaster actually do this seriously for once (even if MLS is handling the production themselves).
