World Soccer XXX: We Have Men Too!

Also, MLS starts this weekend (early start due to the World Cup this winter).

CONCACAF Champions League is going on, forecast for tonight’s match between Colorado and Communicaciones: 12F, 30% chance of snow.

In an effort to distract myself from seemingly impending (potential) armageddon, let's take a look at some of the potential looming issues for UEFA and FIFA:

Guess where the 2022 UEFA Champions League is scheduled to be held? Saint Petersburg in Russia! In Gazprom Stadium!

Guess who's a major UEFA sponsor? Gazprom!

So... yeah it's basically going to be imminently announced that the final is moving somewhere else. The countries with clubs remaining are Austria, the Netherlands, Portugal, Germany, France, Spain, Italy, and the UK and I cannot imagine any of those countries will be keen on their teams going to Russia. UEFA has pretty much fucked around and found out and will be in a bind that'll cost them money.

On the bright side, they had the sense to not allow Russia and Ukraine to be paired in World Cup Qualifying, and both of them are in the playoffs. Unfortunately, Russia is due to host their playoff game in Moscow against Poland next month (and the next one against Sweden or Czechia if they win). So UEFA and FIFA have some real issues that have to be addressed right now because that match is in exactly one month. The best option, of course, would be to just kick Russia out of qualifying but the chances of FIFA (and FIFA is the only one that can) doing that are slim. Hopefully those matches can moved to a neutral venue (because there's no way a match could safely happen in Poland vs Russia).

As for Ukraine, they aren't due to host but the question has to be can they even field a team right now? Most of their team still plays in Ukraine. I suppose it's possible to cobble together something but who knows.

So, serious questions for UEFA and FIFA to answer.

Reyna also went off injured in his first match back, though it doesn’t seem to be anything major.

But, McKennie will leave a pretty big hole in the lineup.

Should they say finish 1-1-1 for instance - would that potentially negatively impact which pot then end up vs. going say 2-1-0 or 2-0-1?

I don’t think there’s really anything at this point that can affect pot seeding either way. I don’t think they can gain or lose enough points.

According to the BBC, UEFA will move the tournament out of Russia in a decision to be made this Friday.

They'll follow the IOC's lead and say that "Russia" can't compete, but the athletes can gather under the "Russian Football Committee" banner if they so choose....

I doubt they do anything, Infantino is quite chummy with Papa Poots. They’ll have some claptrap about “using football to further world peace” or something and be done with it.

This is hitting some other sports too. F1 took the Russian GP off their website and looks to be replacing it with Turkish GP info. Haas technically being American but really being a Russian team may have some implications as well.

Finnish KHL club Jokerit lost their sponsor, then withdrew from the playoffs, and has now apparently withdrawn from the league. They also have Russian ownership so even if they can go back to the Finnish league I’m not sure how sanctions would work there, either.
