Does Portland get a place in any tourneys for being defending champ?
A. * you.

B. This is the knockout round for the 2015-16 tournament with the qualifiers from the 2014 MLS season. Portland will play in the 2016-17 version that starts in August. It'll be Portland's second CCL appearance after getting knocked out in 2013 Group Stage by Olimpia of Honduras.

Is this good or bad?

Re: World Soccer XXVI: Fun for MLS Fans and Eurosnobs Alike

I know nothing at all of the new FIFA president. My initial reaction (possibly unfair!) was, "meet the new boss, same as the old boss." Anyone here have any insights or knowledge?

He is the UEFA President so perhaps a smidgen less corrupt than from another association? I don't know....

Re: World Soccer XXVI: Fun for MLS Fans and Eurosnobs Alike

He was Sunil's 2nd choice...All I got out of it is that he's better than the Asian Federation leader...

Re: World Soccer XXVI: Fun for MLS Fans and Eurosnobs Alike

He wasn't the Bahraini guy who reportedly outed athletes from pro-democracy protests to be killed.

He's also the guy who led all the UEFA draws on TV.

That is the sum of my knowledge.

I heard he followed Platini on voting for Qatar instead of USA for 2022 World Cup...I find it funny we replaced a corrupt swiss guy with a guy from switzerland...

It's because the Swiss are neutral - completely impartial as to where their bribes come from!

MLS Season has started!... Kind of. Quarterfinals of the CONCACAF Champions League started. All MLS vs Liga MX matches.

DC United v Querétaro right now
Seattle v Club America at 10 EST (both on FS1)

Tigres v Real Salt Lake
Santos Laguna v LA tomorrow.

Hopes are... not very high (I'm hoping Seattle just doesn't get blown out).
And lo and behold all the MLS teams were eliminated. Only LA really got blown out and that's more reflective of LA not being a very good team (the 4-0 walloping Seattle put on them in preseason along with these results gives real validity to this).

It's funny reading the reactions on the different sites. Bigsoccer, which skews towards older, longer term fans, is basically "well, we got 4 teams into the quarters for once, the MX teams actually played their A-teams, and, considering we're in preseason, we didn't do bad. Except LA who looks terrible." Compare that to Reddit, which skews to younger, newer fans, going "OMG we suck! We HAVE to get rid of the salary cap! DON GARBER IS HOLDING US BACK!"

Re: World Soccer XXVI: Fun for MLS Fans and Eurosnobs Alike

just some interesting if maybe already known information.
Real Madrid. The stadium seats 85,450 some odd spectators but has actually held as many as 120k. All seats are sold out before the year starts, to season ticket holders. The only way to get some is to go on the aftermarket. Fans who have seats auction them off to individual games a few weeks ahead of time. So you might get to go to a game, but I'm sure if you wanted Barca or ATM, it would really cost you.
Adds up to one heck of a lot of revenue.

It's nice revenue but it's a drop in the bucket compared to their TV revenue. The TV contracts are heavily toward RM and Barca, plus the UEFA CL TV money.

is the implication correct that the american teams play a pre-season type lineup? If so, that's pathetic.

Not a preseason lineup. Almost all the teams played their first choice lineups (DC had new acquisitions that couldn't play due to being cup tied by their previous teams). It has to more with preseason "form". The MX teams were 6-8 weeks into their regular season while for MLS teams these were their first competitive matches of the year. Teams aren't going to perform at their best in their first matches. Seattle had obvious signs of this with some missed passes and positional trouble in the new formation.

It's kind of a poor excuse, because it's mostly the MLS' teams fault, but I'd say one or two of the ties would've had different outcomes if they were played in April.

Qatar now wants guests to stay in tents...

No beer, the climate is going to be too **** hot to play the games during the day, and now you want people to crash in tents?? Jesus H. Christ tapdancing on a cracker!!! Just shift this world cup to the USA and be done with it FIFA!!

Re: World Soccer XXVI: Fun for MLS Fans and Eurosnobs Alike

Was thinking seriously about going to the US - Costa Rica game in the Copa Centennial this summer, but not at those prices. I could go to 3 Cubs games for the same price. $100 for nose bleeds? Nope.

I don't see that holding value come matchday... I'd be shocked if resale will be anything near face for 400 level seats...

The stay is going to be very intense.

It's Drumpf's way of correcting our trade deficit with Latin America.
