Re: World Soccer XXVI: Fun for MLS Fans and Eurosnobs Alike

The real complaint from Wambach was the yellows went to the only 2 USA players with a yellow coming in to the match.

Jill Ellis should be replaced, their offensive plan is awful. They certainly have better players that aren't being used correcting in this system, at least on the offensive side. This group is very skilled and yet they rarely use it.
I know it probably wouldn't sit well with a lot of people involved but, I would hire somebody from the men's side of the game, an MLS coach or the like. They've kept it in house for the most part and it doesn't work well.

Oh, I'm sure plenty of us were wondering if the CONCACAF curse applied to the women's game as well.

Re: World Soccer XXVI: Fun for MLS Fans and Eurosnobs Alike

Wambach wondered aloud if the ref was biased against the U.S. because of the yellows.

I'm glad she brought that up, because only getting two penalties and Colombia playing with 10 and their third string for almost the entire 2nd seemed like the ref was really favoring the girls in yellow.

The red card was a professional foul that absolutely must be called when the last defender trips the breaking opponent. Welcome to the laws of soccer.

I believe she was referring more to the disparagement of the number of fouls between the two teams, especially those called in the first half of play, several of which were fairly embellished by the Colombian players. The two carded fouls were definitely fouls and not just embellishment upon contact; whether or not they were reckless could be debated.

Someone in FIFA has a droll sense of humor....

Some psychologists claim that sports are a way for us to sublimate our martial impulses into non-lethal channels.

In the bottom left quadrant, we get a replay of WWII, Europe. Upper left quadrant, WWIII unfolds. Upper right quadrant, replay WWII, Pacific. Lower right quadrant, former imperial master vs former colony.

Germany-France headed to extra time at 1-1. Germany tied it on late PK, in the 83rd minute.

And now off to penalties. Germany advances 5-4. France missed the 10th kick.

In other news Sepp says he did not resign.

"Soccer is a game where you run around for 120 minutes and then Germany wins on penalties"

I feel bad for France. While technically correct, that "handball" that led to the tying penalty hit the French defender on the top side of her biceps as she was in the process of swinging her arm back away from the ball. Then another player was wide open directly in front of the net who could have blocked the ball down and walked it into the net, letting it deflect off her shin wide with less than 2 minutes left in the 2nd extra time.

Lots of running up and down the field, very few actual shots, even fewer scoring opportunities. Germany did not score in the run of play nor from set pieces either, France flubbed several chances and had a hard-luck bad bounce.

She turned into it. Definitely a handle.

Am I wrong to think the offense looked better- in spite of the fewer goals. It was more about poor last touches than anything else, to me.

Also very different without Rapinoe and Wambach.

Offense looked much better. China also packed the box which made it impossible to create anything a lot of the time, and they were still getting decent shots off.
