World Soccer XXIX: Pro/Rel USA! just kidding!

Re: World Soccer XXIX: Pro/Rel USA! just kidding!

Christian Ramirez should have gotten a full run with this team...he's certainly better than Zardes...
I know he played in January. It's also possible age could have something to do with it, he is 28.

Edit: Looked at MLS Golden Boot standings. The first Americans are at 7th and that's CJ Sapong and Chris Wondolowski. Fair to say the US has a forward problem.

The numbers are in:
2018 Men's World Cup Final - 11.4 million viewers/8.3 rating
2019 Women's World Cup Final - 14.3 million viewers/10.0 rating

Pretty sure it was the same everywhere else, but MANY places opened up early in the Twin Cities for viewing parties and such. At my local "corner store" (read: brewery) we had a couple dozen people show up specifically for the game.

Marginal sport watched more when team wins.

:)

France vs Netherlands draws what in the US :p 0.0002

England-Sweden averaged 1.1 on Fox.

It's fascinating. "No one watches women's soccer" people claim. Then the ratings come in and they're better than the men. "Only because it's a local team!"

I'm sorry. I thought the idea was to get high ratings and those translated to "people are watching." I had no idea there were qualifiers. Let Fox know it needs to give back that ad revenue because people only watched because it was the USWNT.

But if no one watches women's soccer it shouldn't have mattered that it was the USA...right?

It's so confusing when facts get in the way of arguments.

Who on here said no one watches women's soccer during the World Cup?

If it makes you feel better the ratings for the final were down from 2015.

Re: World Soccer XXIX: Pro/Rel USA! just kidding!

One thing that has to be noted when it comes to ratings and pay discussion: the Spanish language rating on Telemundo was around 1.6 million, their largest audience ever for a women’s event.

The Copa America final had 3.7 million.

In 2014 the US men averaged close to 5 million on Univision (around 4.9 IIRC).

That’s one of the biggest problems for the women’s game, they fail to draw in attracting the largest, consistent market/demographic for soccer in this country.

Re: World Soccer XXIX: Pro/Rel USA! just kidding!

And for good reading on the pay dispute Writer Beau Dure has a good post on the subject.

The distortion is the notion that “the women who win the Cup should be paid more than the men who didn’t qualify.” It’s a distortion because they are paid more.

That’s difficult for some people to accept because the narrative is so powerful. We hear “38 cents to the dollar,” and we don’t understand that such comparisons are only one of the myriad scenarios you could create on my spreadsheet.

...

But when the men don’t qualify, they don’t get paid. In my calculations, I see few, if any, men’s players making six figures in 2018. They might make it in 2019, helped by Gold Cup bonuses that are surprisingly low given the attendance for those games.

In other words — the women’s base salary of $100,000, before any bonuses or game fees are paid, is more than what men will make.

When the tournament was played in Canada and the final game started in the afternoon, rather than 8AM on the west coast? I'm stunned.

Overall numbers from Fox

The complete FIFA Women’s World Cup France 2019™ averaged a 1.29 on FOX, FS1 and FS2 among metered markets
Up +1% from 2015 (1.28)
Up +19% from 2011 (1.08)

2-0 U.S. final victory over Netherlands scored a 10.0/27
+20% better than last year’s men’s final (8.3/21)
Best metered market rating for a U.S. soccer telecast since the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup™ final

But shouldn’t the popularity of the team and growth of the sport transcend start times?

(/sarcasm)

BTW, the combined numbers (English + Spanish) come nowhere close to ratings for the US men in 2014 (24.7 million for the game against Portugal).

But, you know, something facts in an argument...

I spelled it out a long time ago and you all scoffed.

Pay the men and women the same base salary and give bonuses based on performance in major tournaments, like the World Cup. That might motivate the men to actually qualify for 2022...
