Re: World Soccer XXIV: The Road to Rio

It's always fun for me when I can actually see a team's tactics when I'm watching a game (sometimes I can, sometimes I just take the announcers' word for it).

Last night I noticed something that the announcers didn't mention, which was Jamaica's "zone press." (I made up that term).

Rather than pressure the player with the ball, the Jamaican forwards and midfielders arranged themselves in a zone, and as soon as the US defense passed the ball, the nearest Jamaican would sprint toward the destination of the pass. Either they'd intercept, or be on the receiver just as the ball arrived. It was very effective in disrupting the US ball movement throughout the first half and the opening minutes of the second half. Only when the US changed its formation with the substitions did they start to break the press effectively.

Re: World Soccer XXIV: The Road to Rio

Certainly appears so. That was one of the best goals I've seen while actually watching a game live on TV.

So, heading into Tuesday, here's what needs to happen for Mexico to be eliminated:

1) Costa Rica beat Mexico, preferably with a clean sheet
2) Panama squeaks out a win against the US

Which game is played first (possibly at the same time though). If CR-MEX goes first and CR wins, does the US use a C squad? :D

Costa Rica hosts Mexico at 9:15 (on Telemundo) and Panama hosts the USA at 9:25 (on beIN sport).

Re: World Soccer XXIV: The Road to Rio

Somehow Nigeria steals all three points in Ethiopia and appear set to advance to Brazil after a 2-1 win in the match at Addis Ababa. beIN Sport will have the Tunisia v Cameroon match from Gafsa, Tunisia live at 12:50 today and the Ghana v Egypt match from Accra on Tuesday at 11:50AM.

Re: World Soccer XXIV: The Road to Rio

Ghana has taken a 4-1 lead on Egypt and he haven't even played an hour yet. The Pharaohs better have a bunch of goals left in them for the return leg in Egypt or Ghana is back in the World Cup.

Re: World Soccer XXIV: The Road to Rio

Wow, pretty sad performance by Egypt today. Ghana has looked spectacular but Egypt couldn't finish some golden opportunities.

6-1 now

Re: World Soccer XXIV: The Road to Rio

Russia gets into the World Cup and Portugal to the playoffs. Methinks England will get drawn against Portugal in the playoffs due to some "seeding" issues.

Re: World Soccer XXIV: The Road to Rio

Come on, [team that's managed by Roy Hodgson]!

Re: World Soccer XXIV: The Road to Rio

I thought Poland wouldn't make it to England due to their travelling via submarine with a screen door.

Re: World Soccer XXIV: The Road to Rio

England were putting a lot of pressure on Poland, but it's still only 1-0. I haven't seen a Polish defense under that much fire since 1939. Too soon?

I hope France and Portugal draw each other next round. Looks like Iceland makes the playoff round as well, though I didn't completely go through all the math. Before adjusting for removal of 6th place teams, Denmark had 16 pts and Iceland and someone else had 17.

Re: World Soccer XXIV: The Road to Rio

Based on results so far the following are guaranteed a seed:

Brazil (host), Argentina, Spain, Germany, Netherlands, and Belgium

Other options for seeds
Colombia is seeded if they beat Paraguay today
Uruguay is seeded if they beat Argentina and qualify for the World Cup
Switzerland is seeded if Colombia doesn't win or Uruguay doesn't win today or Uruguay fails to qualify
Italy is seeded if both Colombia and Uruguay don't win today or if Colombia loses and Uruguay fails to qualify

France will get drawn the lowest team. :D

Re: World Soccer XXIV: The Road to Rio

Denmark is the odd team out for 2nd place.

Pot 1 will be:
Portugal, Greece, Croatia, Ukraine

Pot 2 will be:
France, Sweden, Romania, Iceland
