Re: World Soccer XXIV: The Road to Rio

"Mixed emotions, buddy. Like Larry Wildman going off a cliff in my new Maserati."

Re: World Soccer XXIV: The Road to Rio

We are all New Zealanders! What is their mascot anyway? The hobbit?

Re: World Soccer XXIV: The Road to Rio

Saw it on a buddy's Facebook.

Dear Mexico,

As repayment for helping you get in, please take Mr. Boehner and Mr. Cruz off of our hands.

Yours,
America

Re: World Soccer XXIV: The Road to Rio

I know it is not a popular opinion but two good things. One is the US won't ever lay down no matter if it kills our biggest rivals. Two is as much as everyone hates it, the US and Mexico are the top teams in CONCACAF, the better both teams do the better a chance CONCACAF has to keep 3+ spots for the World Cup.

Re: World Soccer XXIV: The Road to Rio

Watch, Mexico will choke against New Zealand.

Nope. They'll be down 4-1 after the first leg, then score 6 goals in stoppage time of a 6-2 victory in the second leg to advance to Brazil, where they will get to the semifinals.

In the meantime, the Cardinals will win the World Series, the Manning family will get another Super Bowl MVP, Texas A&M will play Oregon for the NCAA national championship and LeBron will win the Masters. Because that's what the sports world does to you, it kicks you in the ****ing groin whenever it wants to.

And ESPN will devote 5 seconds of coverage to who wins the Stanley Cup. :D

Re: World Soccer XXIV: The Road to Rio

I wouldn't be too worried about distribution for the world cup. FIFA likes having a variety and currently all the non-powers get about about 1 spot per ten.
CONCACAF: 3.5 for 35
AFC: 4.5 for 43
CAF: 5.0 for 52
OFC: 0.5 for 11
Based on FIFA rankings, CONCACAF is way better than Asia and pretty on par with Africa.

OK and you tell me when you ever trust FIFA to do the right thing? See Qatar 2022.

All I am saying is that FIFA loves the international flavor of the World Cup the way it is...CONMEBOL and UEFA aren't likely to get more seeds because of that preferred balance. Obviously performing on the big stage is important for appearances but Africa hasn't done much of anything beyond Ghana and yet do you feel they are in jeopardy of losing part of their 5 spots? Asia hasn't done much beyond South Korea and Japan as hosts. It is what it is but I just don't see FIFA doing much to that balance.

Re: World Soccer XXIV: The Road to Rio

In other news if Mexico and Uruguay win the playoffs, we could have a group of Argentina, England, France, United States...let that one sink it!

You have a good point but I still have a total distrust for FIFA. With that said the thing I am most happy with is the fact the team didn't lay down. They wanted to win, screwing over rivals be ****ed, they never stopped trying. This was far from an A team, Panama knew they had to win to have a chance yet the Americans still won.

Re: World Soccer XXIV: The Road to Rio

Imagine being Graham Zusi in the next US -Mexico game, anytime a Mexican says anything he gets to go "You're Welcome".

I understand the distrust and I wouldn't put it past them to take away a half spot from one and give it to another but it seems way more likely that OFC/AFC merge and the half spot goes somewhere else.

In other news Bosnia-Herzegovina is the only country to qualify so far that has not participated in the World Cup before (although they have as part of Yugoslavia). Iceland, Burkina Faso, Jordan, and Ethiopia are still alive and have never qualified before.

Re: World Soccer XXIV: The Road to Rio

One thing to consider in this: Think about the message sent to the rest of CONCACAF with this game, they basically said "if you want something in this region you have to go through us, and we will not make it easy!"

Re: World Soccer XXIV: The Road to Rio

#YoureWelcomeMexico is on Twitter. @USSoccer tweeted that to the Mexican team's Twitter.
