World Soccer XXIII - "Pay" Up Pompey?

Re: World Soccer XXIII - "Pay" Up Pompey?

Has any team ever played a 2-5-3?

We were discussing foosball and wondering how the table game came to be set up that way, and wondering if there would be a market for a foosball table that would let you adjust the alignment of the players: if you wanted to play a 3-4-3 instead, for example, you could just set up the table that way.
I read a book on the history of soccer. Its called something like "inverting the pyramid". Teams used to play the complete opposite of now, hence the title. They would send everyone forward and only leave a couple people back. So I have no doubt there was a time when 2-5-3 was used.

And the 2-3-5 (mentioned by FlagDude below) was the dominant formation in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with the W-M and 2-3-2-3 being pretty minor variations thereon.

In the early 70s my HS played a 2-3-5. IIRC the 5 forwards were outside left, inside left, center, inside right and ouside right.

We had 3 midfielders (halfbacks?) and 2 fullbacks.

*ST. Flash not doing well on this road trip. They gotta pick it up here, as they're getting close to the pace for the top 4; gotta stay ahead. Ideally want to be at 27 (6 home and 9 away, ideal is win at home and tie on the road), and we're at 23. Boston is in 5th at 19 with a game in hand, Chicago at 18 with GIH.

Generalissimo Francisco Franco is still dead and Christian Benteke is still hanging on at Villa.

Really hoping they keep him and he still plays his heart out due to World Cup aspirations.

Watched a good amount of panama-canada. Tons of embellishment from the "canalmen"

*ST. WNY shows ONCE AGAIN they can't hold a lead, and get a 1-1 tie. Portland goalie was off the line on the PK and THEY DIDN'T CALL IT... pathetic.

Naw, they're just overpaid mercenaries.

As a United fan, I really don't have anything bad to say about Arsenal. They aren't irritating like some of the big clubs. I like Wegner and the team tries to build up through youth players and such. I understand the need for splashing the cash sometimes, but Chelsea and City are annoying. Roman is a power-mad Russian mafia don that changes his coaches more than he changes his underwear. I hate how he fired DiMatteo only a few months after winning the European Cup. I thought City was a little better, but they fired Mancini only a year after he won City's first title in nearly 50 years. I hate how coaches get fired for a trophyless season. If United did that years ago, they never would've had the success and be the massively big club they are today.
