World Soccer XXIII - "Pay" Up Pompey?

Re: World Soccer XXIII - "Pay" Up Pompey?

Canada's women's national team did very well in the last Women's world cup, many people thought Sinclair should have been player of the tournament.

There are also several Canadian national team players already in the NWSL that have done quite well.

Yea, not exactly from a game with defense, but still cool...

Present that game to the networks and tell them that's the norm. They'll buy. :p:D

Actually Canada went 0-3 and out in the Group Stage at the 2011 Women's WC. They did get bronze at the 2012 Olympics.

That was the Olympics. They were equal to the United States in the semifinal, but the USA got a break (when is the last time a 6-second violation was called against a goalie?) and won 4-3. I thought Sinclair (a hat trick in that game) was the star of the tournament.

Another shocking result, the US beats Belize 6-1.

Yeah I can't believe Belize scored either...

Re: World Soccer XXIII - "Pay" Up Pompey?

Saw the ratings over in the ESPN thread and was wondering about Fox Soccer Channel. In 2009 and 2010 they averaged 30 and 38,000 viewers in prime time during quarter #2 (April/May/June). In 2012 and 2013 they averaged 35 and 39,000 viewers. In 2011 they averaged 60,000. What was happening in 2011 that caused FSC's numbers to spike?

They played some big friendlies in big stadiums that year.

I'm guessing it's actually because of the 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup. In 2009 and this year, the Gold Cup is in July, in 2011 it was in June. It's not really a product of them having more viewers its a product of one of their feature events shifting quarters.

That was my immediate thought.

Re: World Soccer XXIII - "Pay" Up Pompey?

I should note, a few of the Gold Cup games are going to be broadcast on FOX (the OTA channel) instead of the entire tournament on FSC. The next US game on Saturday is on FOX as well as the (potential) US Quarterfinal and the Final.

Of course FSC will soon FXX so...

Re: World Soccer XXIII - "Pay" Up Pompey?

This is a pretty wild story:

Plateau United Feeders and Police Machine figured they needed a big win in the final round at an amateur tournament to outdo the other and earn promotion to Nigeria's professional football leagues.

Their wins were definitely big: 79-0 and 67-0.

The results have sparked outrage, an indefinite suspension of the four clubs involved in the games, and an investigation into match-fixing by the Nigeria Football Federation.

....

Chasing a place in Nationwide League Division 3, Nigeria's lowest professional league, Plateau United Feeders reportedly scored 72 of their mountain of goals against Akurba FC in the second half. A rate of more than a goal a minute. In fact, a goal about every 40 seconds. Non-stop for 45 minutes.

At the same time, Police Machine reportedly swept 61 goals past Babayaro FC in the second half after leading by a relatively modest 6-0 at halftime.

That makes sense. Most of their audience would be tuning in at other times (Saturday mornings, Tuesday/Wednesday afternoon) rather than prime time anyway. The Gold Cup would give people a reason to tune in at night.

Re: World Soccer XXIII - "Pay" Up Pompey?

I wonder how the clubs involved did this without thinking they would throw up red flags.... 12-0 or 15-0 is at least plausable... What happened is absurd...
Hell, 79-0 and 67-0 scores are pretty absurd in American College football. Threatening to go for triple digits in soccer??

Re: World Soccer XXIII - "Pay" Up Pompey?

Has any team ever played a 2-5-3?

We were discussing foosball and wondering how the table game came to be set up that way, and wondering if there would be a market for a foosball table that would let you adjust the alignment of the players: if you wanted to play a 3-4-3 instead, for example, you could just set up the table that way.

Weren't old versions of foosball, though, set up as a 2-3-5 and everyone was behind centre?
