World Soccer XXIII - "Pay" Up Pompey?

I've been a referee for years and I did a match that went to 15 kicks. Now, by rule, nobody can kick twice until everyone for that team on the field has kicked. Once you get to about 7 or 8 you get guys who had zero intention of kicking. One kid, kicking like 9th for his team, grabbed the ball from me and asked, "what do I do?" :D

And, in an anal retentive referee moment, its not "Penalty Shootout" it's "Kicks from the penalty mark as a procedure used to determine a winner of the match". ;)

Back in high school we went 9 rounds in a state semifinal. In 1982 the MPA decreed they would use corner kicks instead of penalty kicks to resolve ties. North Yarmouth Academy and St. Dom's went to 73 corner kicks before NYA finally won. That rule was abolished after the season.

*** do you care? I didn't give anybody grief about it.

It was during business hours so not too hard to figure some might be hoping to watch it that night...I would have watched whole game if I didn't know score...knowing score just reduced things I had to do that night.

It wasn't a problem for me or the other person but you have to be a petty dick. Of course, that is your MO so I shouldn't be surprised.

Was going to say, penalty shootout is something from indoor soccer where the player is allowed to dribble up from the yellow line before shooting.

I remember MLS tried that when the league first started. It was a train wreck.

Didn't they also try stoppages instead of stoppage time, running the clock in the wrong direction, penalty kicks instead of ties, and other things to make the game "more pleasing to Americans"?

I think the NASL did that. If you were tied at the end of regulation, they put the ball on the 35 (off side) yard line and you had 5(?) seconds to get the shot off. They did not like the spot kick.

Brazil will play Portugal at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro on September 8. It is an official FIFA date, so both teams will have their full rosters available for the game. Tickets go on sale July 19 and will start at $50.

I believe it means that club teams will not be playing that weekend, or that club teams cannot prevent players from competing for the national team.

More than that, clubs are required to release their players for national team duty. Players can decline due to injury, but if the national team thinks that a claimed "injury" is a little too convenient, they can suspend the player from their club game the following weekend.

Thought it was cool to see Landon return and score twice, albeit against a crap side. Not sure what it means for him and the team, but it can't hurt if to have someone of his WC experience in good enough form to make the roster for '14.

Any worries for the World Cup in Brazil with what happened in Sao Paulo and the problems with protests in the Confederations Cup?
Would FIFA even care?
