World Soccer XXI: Don't Tread on the Red, White, and Blue

Re: World Soccer XXI: Don't Tread on the Red, White, and Blue

I'm generally against bandwagoning/glomming onto teams which you have no relation to in a country that you may never visit. I don't see a reason to make adopting a team the thing to do. I do find some of interesting and some teams more interesting than others but its always interesting that the interest tends to be for the superstar clubs, etc.

That's my take on it at least.
I resent that! My team had to struggle to avoid relegation last season. :p

And my team was almost liquidated! I started following them like two months before they enter administration and were relegated! Not the brightest move! :D

Re: World Soccer XXI: Don't Tread on the Red, White, and Blue

Walcott puts Arsenal up over Udinese after four minutes. Maybe they'll at least not botch their CL qualifier.

Wonder if Arsene is going to sell any one else at halftime? I see Eboue follows Cesc out the door, having been sold to Galatassaray, with Bendtner, Almunia, and Nasri other likely exits. I haven't seen this much unrest in Arsenal supporters in a very long time.

Re: World Soccer XXI: Don't Tread on the Red, White, and Blue

Pompey just got its first win since MARCH, a 1-0 victory over Reading at Fratton Fortress.

They signed Benjani last week too, which was nice to see.

Re: World Soccer XXI: Don't Tread on the Red, White, and Blue

Which the FA is going after him for, as it should. Touchy, eh?

Not touchy at all. But you can't moan about the Barton incident (which should have earned both players reds imo) and call it more of the same when Arsenal should have been down to 10 men already.

I'll try to present you with more complete match reports in the future. Of course then I'd also note that Barton's dragging Gervinho to his feet was in the box during play should have resulted in a penalty if the reffing crew had any clue what they were doing. I can understand the head referee not seeing it, but no excuse for the rest of the crew.

well if any of y'all have satellite, the nufc-arsenal game is on YES right now (15 mins in).

Re: World Soccer XXI: Don't Tread on the Red, White, and Blue

Just noticed Blackburn has gone away from the red away kit to a black and gold one. Much nicer.

I hated red since it reminded me too much of other teams, including ones I dislike. ;)

Oh, you can't dangle that out there and not deliver on the details... go for it.

If it helps, I'm going to flat out admit that there are times that I sense a little bit of a poser-ish quality to some of the Euro-soccer fanboys. It's one of the reasons that I remain more or less unaffiliated to this day.

Similar to people in other countries rooting for the Yankees or the Lakers, there are plenty of US fans who couldn't name more than 3 players on the EPL team they 'root' for...but, there are fans who are very well informed and follow their team closely...and it seems the number is growing.

I was just at a cookout the other day and spent an hour with 3-4 guys talking about 'their' teams. It was impressive how much people knew, and how obvious it was that it wasn't just buying a jersey at Dick's. We had a few EPL guys, RM and Roma in the conversation. One guy had lived in Madrid for work and became a fan, one has family in italy and goes over to see a game every year.

Of the 16 families on my son's team we have 4-5 that follow a Euro club closely, aside from the Union. Even if they weren't fans 10 years ago, people tend to find a club from their 'homeland or homecity' and follow it.

Conversely, I do still see people wearing a jersey and strike up a conversation to find out they don't even know what league/country the team is in. Being a 'real' soccer fan, I beat them up.

Re: World Soccer XXI: Don't Tread on the Red, White, and Blue

I know I catch heat for being a United fan, but here's how I became a fan.

It was Easter of 90 or 91 and I was stuck at a relative's house watching all the adults chatting. I was told to go watch TV and I found an FA Cup match between United and Crystal Palace on MSG. (Which you had to pay extra for back in the day.)

I had watched other games, but the other teams were boring. United attacked and showed flair, which I hadn't seen before. I was hooked on the game and became a fan of soccer because of them. What sealed the deal for me was when Ryan Giggs featured. He was/is an amazing player. He's my favorite of all time.

Call me a bandwagoner, but I like United for those reasons.

History in Mexico City tonight. FC Dallas (Yes FC Dallas) beats Pumas 1-0 in the CCL to become the first American team to win in Mexico.

MLS teams 4-0 right now. TFC plays tomorrow.

Good to see MLS teams taking the competition seriously. The recent seasons of the CCL should solidify the league's place as second best in North America. A few years ago there were some truly embarrassing MLS performances.

It's better now that the League has been somewhat willing to alter the schedule for the CCL teams.

Plus not having somebody like the Revs or Red Bulls in it and LA actually playing helps.

Hee. BBC commentary re. John Arne Riise's ability to shoot from range: "He can certainly whack it."

Re: World Soccer XXI: Don't Tread on the Red, White, and Blue

Europa League scores of British interest:

FC Thun 0 - 1 Stoke City FT (I fail to comprehend how we live in a world in which Stoke can win games in Europe)
Fulham 3 - 0 Dnipro FT (Dempsey brace)
Hearts 0 - 4 Spurs 2H (yessir.)
Nacional 0 - 0 Birmingham 2H
Celtic 0 - 0 FC Sion 2H
NK Maribor 1 - 1 Rangers 2H (Not a great day for the SPL)

Re: World Soccer XXI: Don't Tread on the Red, White, and Blue

Wholly acceptable. Also, while it's obviously still early, this kid Pajtim Kasami who Fulham signed from Palermo sounds really talented.

Spurs run it out to 5-0, goals from van der Vaart, Defoe, Livermore, Bale and Lennon. Rumor has it that I may be in the side that they will field at WHL for the return match, which is shoehorned between a Monday @ManU and Sunday v.ManC.

I'd lay 10 quid on you to score a brace in that match.

Re: World Soccer XXI: Don't Tread on the Red, White, and Blue

Wow, terrible reffing in New England tonight. NYRB are already down 2-0 (they did that on their own), but McCarty is taken down by Shuttleworth in the box and after initially being awarded a penalty kick, the referee went to the AR, changed the call. He gave McCarty a yellow for diving and gave NE the ball. Replays showed there was absolutely no mistaking the keeper taking down McCarty. Terrible.
