World Soccer XXI: Don't Tread on the Red, White, and Blue

Did you even read my post? They decidedly weren't better than a "handful of the very best teams in England", they were relegation contenders, owned by a war criminal.

But yeah Bob, I bet teams were lining up to be in that position.

Well... Teams that would be happy to be in the Championship, for starters.

Re: World Soccer XXI: Don't Tread on the Red, White, and Blue

The MLS is sick of dealing with them. Everytime they speak of expansion the MLS says they have a few interested parties in the NY area. Most of them probably want the Cosmos name from a marketing stand point, but the current group is likely going to hold any potential owner up.

It's kind of like internet squatting. Let's get a domain name for something common and hold up everyone for a ton of money.

Bob, you accuse me of knowing nothing of Arsenal's history, you know ZERO of MCFC's history. City from 2003-2008 was mired in mid-table medicrity and relegation battles. In 2006-07, they failed to score a league goal at home after new-years! This is only a few years after barely winning promotion to division 1 in a playoff against Gillingham (division 1 now being the Championship.) But yeah, a lot of teams would love to be in that position. I don't think you'd want Arsenal in the position of not being able to pay the wages....or paint the pitch...would you? I'd rather have City in the position they're in now. Being able to build state of the art facilities, help the community around them and put a winning team on the pitch. When it's finished, the City academy will be second to none in the world. The overhaul of the players was only the 1st phase in a process of re-building Manchester City FC.

Hey Bob, Enjoy a taste of Man City's history...

And yah, some team mired in the Third Division, has no huge EPL TV deal, etc. wouldn't like to be in City's place? Get real. Of course things weren't perfect for them, but they aren't for others either. That's a ridiculous standard.

Again...swing and a miss. Keep in mind, Manchester City in the 60's and 70's was one of the best teams in England. They had guys like Joe Corrigan, Colin Bell, Francis Lee, Mike Summerbee, Neil Young and Mike Doyle. They had a management team of Malcolm Allision and Joe Mercer. So yeah...a lot of teams would love to have had those great years than fall into the abyss! In the 80's and 90's Peter Swales and then Francis Lee almost destroyed the Club. Lee became chairman after his playing days and hired Alan Ball...who got City Relegated.

Thankfully David Bernstein and John Wardle came along and rescued the club.

Hey Bob, Enjoy a taste of Man City's history...

I'm familiar with City's history. Mid-table mediocrity in the EPL is something most other teams in England can only dream of. I actually have taken more interest in City than most teams, as I liked that they tried to give ManU a run for their money in Manchester. I was interested to the point that one time when I was traveling through Manchester and had a chunk of the day between trains, I walked over to the old Maine Road stadium, though it wasn't the best neighborhood. I liked that fact that City tended to have the local support of Manchester residents, as compared to ManU, who didn't draw as much local support, but was a global brand. They've had some tough times, but certainly not the world is ending misery you all try to make it sound like. Don't tell me I don't know at least some about City's history.

It's ironic that you say others, like Arsenal, wouldn't want to be in a position of not being able to pay wages, etc., when your club is leading the charge to drive up wages, makes things even less competitive, etc., putting further financial stress on a lot of smaller clubs. But, turn the blind eye and celebrate your purchased silverware.

Bob...you don't know what its like to be relegated twice in 3 seasons! That's not just some rough times...had it not been for the Paul Dickov goal in that video...the Club would have likely gone into administration and possibly FOLDED. The financial position was like that of Portsmouth.

And Bob...before Monsour took over...the Club could not pay the wages. Garry Cook is on record saying that. You have chosen to hate City for what they're doing. Fine. But, don't belittle the hardships that City and it's fans went through. No one would want to go through the turmoil that City went through. We had false dawn after false dawn before the take over. We had people coming in and promising everything and getting our hopes up...only to have them dashed again. So yeah....a lot of teams' supporters would love to have their hearts and guts ripped out of them year after year while our rivals win everything and have the vast money and resources to do as they wanted...

Come to think of it...that's how CC fans must feel! :D

My second team is Wolves, so with them I'm used to yo-yoing a good bit. Wolves were closer to folding than City ever was. I'm not belitting the tough times City went through. I've acknowledged them several times. I was on City's side through those tough times. But, I'm able to separate the challenges they faced when they were a normal football club from what they've now become with petrol dollar-fueled success almost no teams can imagine challenging. I'm no ManU fan, as people around here can attest, but at least they have largely over recent decades funded their success in ways that reflect some level of normal business practice, by faking in more and more revenue to have the money to buy players. Now, some would argue they've sold their soul, but that's another topic for another day. I guess now both Manchester teams have sold their soul, so you're even now with your hated rivals.

Obviously you'd RATHER have them in the position they're in now. Any group of fans would rather have their owners be among the richest in sports. That's not the point. The point is, most clubs would happily be in the position City WERE in because being midtable in the Premier League is still better than 98% of the other teams in the world. And also, it's not like there's no middle ground between "in relegation trouble" and "spending hundreds of millions of pounds to buy everyone else's stars".

Wolves is a tough opponent...I think they will be stronger than the rubbish City faced last week! :D

Some of that rubbish was injured. I'll admit Al-Citeh are the faves, but I'll believe it when I see it. They are notorious for shooting themselves in the foot.

By "tough" do you mean "dirty"? Because Wolves are definitely "tough".

I see your point, but that is an utterly ludicrous standard.

By that logic, Revs fans should be thrilled with their team/ownership. At least they aren't in the Somalian Second Division! etc. etc.

WWM...

Essentially he was saying we should have been happy living in United's shadow and living without the hope of winning anything in our lifetime.
