World Soccer XXI: Don't Tread on the Red, White, and Blue

Re: World Soccer XXI: Don't Tread on the Red, White, and Blue

So I haven't had a chance to watch my DVR recording yet (and might not pick-up on it when I do) what were the big problems with the officiating in the game? Thanks.

The complete lack of common sense. But don't worry, the issues don't really arise until the 2nd half. So please enjoy the 1st half without any concerns.

Looks like FIFA is taking down videos of the Wambach goal due to copyrights. BOOO! :(

Re: World Soccer XXI: Don't Tread on the Red, White, and Blue

ESPN Poll about which goal was bigger, Landon's or Abby's is interesting. It's wrong, but interesting as Abby is leading in the US and worldwide. Although not by that much.

The #1 ranked women's team in the world winning a QF at the world cup is not as impressive or as important as the US men getting the points in the group stage against Algeria in order to advance to the knockout stages.

I think the problems with the officiating will be abundantly clear. They're pretty blatant. Stevie Wonder could see them. Be aware that the time for this game is way over three hours, so your DVR might not have gotten it all (mine cut out after Abby's goal and I had to tape the replay this morning). You can watch the entire broadcast on espn3.com, including pre- and post-match commentary. If you don't have access to espn3, drop me a line and I'll let you in on a secret ;)

I did extend the setting but just to 3 hours so I probably did miss it. And I didn't have the dvr set this morning for the replay. It looks ESPN Classic will replay it again tonight.

For me, the most egregious was the awarding of a Mulligan on a saved PK. And in true FIFA fashion, there was no explanation of why it was awarded. Could've been that the linesman thought Solo came off the line early. Could've been encroachment by a US player. Wrong on both accounts. Solo moved laterally, just like pretty much every goalie does no every PK. As for the encroachment, if there was any -- and I don't think there was -- it had absolutely no effect on the play.

Some people had a problem with the awarding of a PK in the first place. I thought it was at least arguable. But the do-over was outrageous IMO.

And those people putting it up will get felony charges probably.

Not to mention FIFA's embarrassment because the USA actually won the game.

Bigger in as much as the men's game is bigger but:
- elimination from the WC in the quarters would have been a huge disappointment for the women ranked #1 in the world; for the men it is old hat.
- stoppage time of the second OT in the knockout round, hard to top that
- 10 players
- the refs
- playing Brazil
- the women were playing, with all due respect to France, for a place in the finals
- Sweden beat them already but with Germany out the US is the favorite to win the WC

I think each of those factors favor Abby's goal

Re: World Soccer XXI: Don't Tread on the Red, White, and Blue

Yeah, I saw one this year in the EPL. The game where Man United screwed the pooch against...Blackpool? Blackburn? I can't remember. The game where they were up 2-0 and gave up an OG and an awful play by Van Der Sar.

Van Der Sar picked up the ball after it being played back to him by a defender. (Awful call, but whatever) They had a indirect free kick inside the box.
I think it was Blackpool; I remember it being an orange team.

Besides the team itself (and their families), about 4 other people would have been disappointed.

Also they were always 3rd favorite in this tournament. So while not making the semi's is disappointing, its about who you draw to play in the QF. Brazil was supposed to win that game even before FIFA intervention.

It also is the one that happened most recently and is most fresh in their mind which probably led to at the very least a few clicks for Abby over Landycakes.

The situation for Abby's goal make it "bigger" - but it's still women's soccer vs. the men's world cup. It's like asking if Warren Morris' walk-off home run to win the College World Series 15 years ago is a bigger hit than Carlton Fisk's or Bucky Dent's. The answer is no.

Why was Brazil supposed to win? Was it their 0'fer against the US? That they had never won a tournament? I don't know Brazil's record against the other top 4-5 teams but it must not be very good if they have never won a tournament.
The questions raised by the Sweden loss were significant but there was plenty of reasoning that the US could and would still win.

If the US had gotten even reasonable ref decisions and therefore stayed at full strength I wouldn't have been surprised if they further wore down a tired looking Brazil squad and that game was over in regulation.

Brazil knocked the US out of the 2007 tournament, 4-0. They have never won a major tournament, but have been in the finals of the last few. The US had beaten them the last couple meetings, but i believe most of those were not competitions.

Playing the what-if game really works both ways. What-if the own goal goes wide on that clearing attempt? So lets not bother with that.

Brazil was favored because of their front three, mainly Marta. She is widely believed to be the best female in the game. They have never won a major title because the US defeated them. In 2007 they finally beat the US in a major competition but lost to Germany. Brazil also has a lower ranking than they might deserve because they play ridiculously few matches except for major competitions and qualifying...they had played exactly one game this year before entering the WWC. This also means that, IMHO, they are less prepared for the tournaments in which they compete.

The most notable previous meeting is the 2008 Olympic final, which the U.S. won.

For me, I don't think asking the ref to make calls that are factual or logical and thus not literally change the course of the game is the same as 'what if the ball had bounced the other way?'.

Even if we agree the ESPN announcers were homers, Darke's comments along the lines of "I've been in this game a long time and don't recall ever seeing something like this" give me some confidence that the ref was well beyond normal referee influences on the game.

whatever... I doubt we'll agree, regardless.

More on that African DP news: Vancouver have an announcement scheduled for tomorrow at 9:30 Pacific. Colin Udoh says the player is captain of his national team.

Edit: Joseph Yobo?
