Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

I'm surprised Poland shot it at the right net. :D

Sorry...

(My brother's wife's family is Polish and they made the joke to me first.)

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

Why is Ukraine/Brazil being played in England?

Well, I imagine all the European clubs who employ Brazilians wouldn't be too keen on having their players flying all over the place, so having it in South America is out. Playing it in Ukraine is an unattractive option because they'd have to charge much lower ticket prices, not to mention it's tougher for any traveling Brazilian fans to get to. Then you throw in the fact that Derby has the largest Ukrainian population in England, and there you go.

Love the fans chanting "get her number" when Julie Foudy was interviewing the guys from Sons Of Ben.

Also, how hilarious is it that the picture of Carlos Valderrama on his Wikipedia page was obviously taken when somebody randomly saw him in an airport and flagged him down to take his picture?

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

The English Football Community has lost a true Legend today. :(

RIP Malcolm!

Former Manchester City manager Malcolm Allison has died aged 83.

Allison joined the Blues in 1965 as assistant manager to Joe Mercer, with the duo helping City to land the League Championship, FA Cup, European Cup Winners' Cup and League Cup in a stunning three-year spell in the late 60s - the most successful time in the club's history.

'Big Mal', as Allison was known, was famed for his innovative coaching techniques and was a larger-than-life character, known for wearing a fedora and his love of cigars.

Allison took sole charge of the club in 1972, and also had a spell back at the club from 1979 to 1980.

Former City winger Mike Summerbee told www.mcfc.co.uk: “Malcolm changed football by making us train like athletes, in that respect he was ahead of his time and he was a great tactician as well. He was also one of the lads - in effect he was the twelfth player from the sidelines but he knew how to crack the whip and we respected him.

“He was a great psychologist; he knew how to handle me and how to get more out of me. He did the same for Colin Bell, Francis Lee, Neil Young and all of that great side.”

City Life president and former general secretary Bernard Halford, who knew Malcolm for more than 40 years, said: "We will never see the likes of him ever again, and he did so much for the club. The signing of Tony Book was a masterstroke, but he enhanced the careers of so many other players and they worshipped him.

"You knew he was in a room with you, not many people have that kind of presence but Malcolm did, and he transferred the confidence he had in himself to the team.

Jimmy Wagg: Malcolm Allison was cocky, opinionated... and irresistible

"He felt we could beat anybody and he wanted the players to think that way too."

City, whose flags are at half mast, will pay tribute to Allison at their next Premier League home game against Arsenal next Sunday.

There will also be an appropriate commemoration to his life and work in the memorial garden at the City of Manchester Stadium, said the club.

Allison also managed Crystal Palace, Bath, Plymouth, Galatasaray, Sporting Lisbon, Toronto City, Middlesbrough and Bristol Rovers.

He spent most of his playing career as a centre half at West Ham, making 238 appearances (10 goals) in the 1950s.

However his playing career was cut short after suffering tuberculosis.

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

The sale is complete. John Henry owns Liverpool FC.

That club needs more than a new owner right now. Somehow they have to find a way to keep Torres and free up money for transfers. I think at best Liverpool are a mid-table team. They need help immediately. I think they need to keep Hodgson, give him money to get quality players in January, then see what they can get in the summer.

Right now its a 3 horse race in the Premier League...

1. Chelsea
2. City
3. Salford United

2022 or Bust!

http://voices.washingtonpost.com/soccerinsider/2010/10/us_soccer_withdraws_from_2018.html

U.S. Soccer withdraws from 2018 World Cup host consideration, will focus on 2022 bid efforts

The United States has withdrawn its bid to host the 2018 World Cup and will focus on efforts to stage the 2022 tournament, officials announced today. With FIFA, soccer's international governing body, expected to select a European bid for the '18 event, the move by the USA Bid Committee, first reported on the Insider Twitter page, was widely anticipated.

FIFA will choose the hosts for both World Cups on Dec. 2 in Zurich. England is the front-runner for 2018, with Russia posing the greatest challenge. Spain/Portugal and Netherlands/Belgium are also bidding. With a European nation assured of hosting that tournament, the United States is the favorite for 2022 in its competition with Qatar, Australia, Japan and South Korea.

Yanks Out!!!11!!!

Oh wait, I guess these yanks are okay.

HAHA - I love the hypocritical nature of the scousers. Totalliy w--- the way they think. Like I said though, the club is nowhere near safe. They're still in the drop zone, they have no depth in the squad, and I don't think Hodgson has who he wants in the squad. Its going to be a battle to get to January.

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

Yeah, its all about the fact that they were Americans and not that they were the worst owners in club history who spent no money on the club and saddled it with an extreme amount of debt.

They used the term Yanks because it was a catchy slogan, they didn't hate them because they were Americans.

That and Yank and Wank go well together lyrically.

So when they burned that American flag, that was catchy too right?

Yes, I think it was because it was that they were Americans that it was the problem...they burned the flag stupidly in protest of them...using the flag to represent them.

I think we're arguing semantics. They didn't hate them because they were Americans, but because they were horrible owners, they looked for simple ways to represent them, and their nationality worked.

Just think, at least as not as bad as City got in the 1990's. Peter Swales was the chairman for years, poured money on bad players and left the club in bad shape. Then Francis Lee took over, left City was less money and hired Alan Ball who got the club relegated. Thankfully, David Bernstein came in and injected some cash in, cut the spending down and cleared out the dead wood. City brought in Joe Royle who brought the club back to the Premier Leaggue, Kevin Keegan stablized the club, Pearce helped a bit. Thaksin almost took the club down until the Arabs swooped in for the rescue.

That is the rollercoaster ride of life as a City supporter.

THANK YOU SHEIKH MONSOUR!!!
