Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

Portsmouth played Millwall today and won 1-0 on the road.

13 out of a possible 15 points for Portsmouth in their last 5 games. They are looking good. :)

Random: The new guy who recently started watching Fulham matches with my group is a St. Cloud grad.

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

Interesting aspect to the Rooney story. Everton get 25% of the transfer fee if he's sold (if it's over 27m pounds). That would seem to free up funds for Landon transfer, if that's what they want.

That is also if MLS is willing to part with him. Sure, the money would be nice, but how much of a hit would it be in the loss of ratings if Lando does make his move to Everton permanent.

Well, yeah. But everyone has a price. Say Rooney really does go (if he goes at all) for the 100 million pound figure that's being tossed around. That's 25m going to Everton, which works out to $40m USD. MLS supposedly values Landon around $16m.

As for a hit in the loss of ratings, MLS games are consistently in the .2-.4 range as it is, and Garber claims he doesn't care about them anyway.

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

Shameless plug for a thing I wrote:

Last weekend, Joe Posnanski wrote an article ranking the 32 current NFL coaches by how good they were as players. I wrote something similar about the 32 managers at this past summer's World Cup, which has been printed as a guest post by the excellent Fulham blogger Rich Allen of Craven Cottage Newsround, who himself wrote, on Monday, a similar piece about the 20 current Premier League managers, also inspired by the Joe Posnanski article. If you're interested in more of my blathering, you should go read it. :D

You know, I would not mind at all if someone kicked Shalrie Joseph in the face. ****ing thug.

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

Tottenham and Everton play tomorrow on ESPN 2. I'm debating getting up to watch the game. It's going to be a great game, but it's sooo early for a Saturday.

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

Not really surprised by Rooney's U-turn. For 180,000 a week. Maybe he'll start playing better now that he's making twice what he was. Apparently his previous contract was no longer enough to motivate him.

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

I wonder if people in the US would view contracts any differently if we valued them on a per week basis. To me, 180,000 a week sounds high, but really it only works out to around $15 million US, which isn't really more than big name guys over here make.

True it wouldn't be out of place on the Yankees. But those sorts of numbers blow away anything in the wage structure of almost every soccer team in the world. I'm pretty sure Arsenal don't have anyone who remotely approaches a wage like that, and probably nobody else other than City and Chelski do in England.

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

And they had actually been playing pretty well lately, against all expectations. They've become such a financial mess the last couple years that I can't say I really understand much about their situation anymore. But, always a shame to see a team on the verge of disappearing. Crazy how you can with the FA Cup and shortly thereafter be in such bad shape.
