World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

Do the rest of fixtures involving Pompey get canceled? I wonder what happens to the players if they are just sold off or are they free transfers?

What a shame and Gaydamark is a punk. I hope his new team gets relegated again and again.

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

Not really surprised by Rooney's U-turn. For 180,000 a week. Maybe he'll start playing better now that he's making twice what he was. Apparently his previous contract was no longer enough to motivate him.

I have no doubt it was nothing more then a play for more money. I think it was quite obvious in fact.

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

I would be really upset if that were the case. Pompey's looked pretty good lately, and they are my team. :(

And now they're backtracking mightily.

Andronikou stated that Portsmouth will play at Hull City tomorrow but said Gaydamak's Jewish faith meant he was out of contact until the Sabbath ended on early Saturday evening and so is unavailable to resolve the issue. The article had been published on the website due to "pure frustration".

Good news I guess?

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

I read on the Sky site that the deal to get Pompey out of administration was in place, but Gaydamak pulled his antics at the 11th hour. Typical behavior from this classless clown.

Yep, that's basically what happened. Many people think Gaydamak has had this plan since he bought the club. The ground Fratton Park is on is his, but he can't build on it, it can only be used for a Football Stadium, UNLESS there's no club.

In what is very possibly Portsmouth FC's final game, they are winning 2-0 to Hull City with goals just before and after the halftime whistle. If they win today it's 16 out of 18 points, a great run for them.

EDIT: Things are looking up!

But the outlook is now looking much brighter after lawyers representing Gaydamak insisted they would be recommending to the business tycoon that he signs the deal with Portsmouth regarding the payment schedule of £2.2million owed to him.

Tim Stocks of Gaydamak's lawyers Taylor Wessing believes the situation could be resolved by the end of Saturday.

GOD I hope it's true. While I can't WATCH any games, I've been following Portsmouth since late last year with their MatchDay Commentary on their website. I'm going to England next winter hopefully, and will definitely get down to Portsmouth to see a game at Fratton Park!

And it's over! Portsmouth FC, at least for now, is alive and well!

http://sports.yahoo.com/soccer/news?slug=ap-portsmouth-future

PORTMOUTH, England (AP)—Portsmouth will avoid going out of business after former owner Sacha Gaydamak agreed to accept 2.2 million pounds ($3.5 million) the club owes him in installments over five years.

Play up Pompey!

Pompey wins 2-1 to Hull!

2 points out of the playoff at the moment!

Two weeks in a row now that Fulham lose on an offside goal. Frustrating.

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

Kind of rooting for Pompey to bounce back to the Prem.

It would like giving this to Gaydamak.

With the way they're playing, it's certainly possible. Only 3 points off of a playoff spot at the moment. I'd love to see them back in Tier 1, but a lot of Pompey fans are surprisingly happy with them in Tier 2...we play closer games, they are more enjoyable to watch. I can sort of understand that, but I'd prefer if they were Tier 1.

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

The 1967 Inter Milan team wishes Celtic's inability to do anything productive in "big" games was this pronounced. Ugh.

At least Arsenal won.

Any time Al-Citeh loses is a good day.

And United beats someone there supposed to or once in their life this season beating everyone's favorite hackers, Stoke 2-1.

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

MLS Playoff matchups are set.

New York Red Bulls (1E)
San Jose Earthquakes (6W)

Columbus Crew (2E)
Colorado Rapids (5W)

LA Galaxy (1W)
Seattle Sounders (4W)

Real Salt Lake (2W)
FC Dallas (3W)

Don't understand how the league's best team (LA) doesn't get to face the 8th best team (San Jose) in the playoff first round.

Edit: So I don't get preached at, I understand that's the way the rules are, I'm saying the rules are misguided.

I agree, it is a strange rule. Red Bulls-Seattle, Crew-Dallas, Galaxy-Quakes, RSL-Rapids would make a lot more sense.

Speaking of which, a bunch of friends and I have tickets to the Red Bulls-Quakes match next week. Looking forward to that.

Same reason the league's best team doesn't necessarily face the worst team in the playoffs in MLB, the NBA, the NHL, ...

Nope. That analogy fails because those sports all divide by division, and don't have balanced schedules. And even with that, the #1 seed in each conference in the NBA and the NHL gets to face the #8 seed in their conference.
If MLS took the top 4 from the West and top 4 from the East, then that would be fine. But if they're going to take the top 8 teams regardless of conference, then it makes no sense not to divide them 1 v.8, 2 v. 7, and so on

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

response to Craig...Right, but LA, with the best record, gets a tougher team than Red Bulls...it would seem to make sense that if the only teams out of one conference are the top 2 then the remaining teams are seeded according to their record. If they are going to cross pollinate, why not do so while giving the top seed the best track to the finals?

They don't take the top 8 regardless of conference, they take the top two from each conference and then the top 4 remaining teams regardless of conference.

True. It amounts to nearly the same thing though I think.
