World Soccer XVI: The Sadness

Re: World Soccer XVI: The Sadness

So, it wasn't a good football weekend, was it?

In the space of roughly 27 hours, my No. 3 team (S. Korea), No. 1 team (USA) and No. 2 team (England) all went down the tubes.

I was working at an All-Star football game and DVRed the USA game. Followed it on my phone until extra time, at which point I found a TV. Not sure if I'll ever get around to watching that game on the DVR.

Anyhow, it sounds like we just came out flat. Klinsmann said today that he thought they were still living off the Algeria game and looked out of sorts early. Ghana's not fantastic, but they're not crap, either. Played Germany close, beat Serbia. I thought this game would be a coin flip and we didn't get it. I'll worry about the details later.

All in all, it was fun. Maybe a little overrated, but fun. I'd call it good, but not a great campaign. Could have been better with better defense and fewer injuries, but hey, we finished ahead of England, won the group, we're a pretty legit bunch and I think there's lots to be positive about in the future.

At least we didn't embarrass ourselves. Granted, I didn't see the first half (and thus have only watched replays of the disputed goal), but all that missed call really does is give England apologists an excuse for some absolutely horrendous defending. Even if the goal counts, I have serious doubts they could have kept the scoreline 2-2 and even if they did, they just would have lost on penalties.

When you're down about this one, just remember, everybody,

MEXICO GOT CURBSTOMPED!

And that makes me happy.

Two last notes: The number one reason I hate being in CONCACAF is having to wait four years between relevant competitions. The Gold Cup just isn't the same. Always at home, really only two decent teams, pretty blah. Even the trophy's a rather ridiculous size. Can't we get a guest entry to Euro 2012? Pleeeeease?

Then again, we'd probably inexplicably send a back-up side like we did to the Copa America a while back.

Finally, I saw a few minutes of the Union-Sounders game today and thought to myself, "Boy, I ought to try to get into MLS," but I just can't. It's not the quality of play or anything like that. It's just hard to get excited about a league where the closest team (for me, it's Chicago) is just so darned far away. Of course, England's much farther, but that's a different animal. Maybe some day.

US didn't play well Saturday and that's too bad, but there were some good moments. I'm more disappointed that the journey's over than I am that they played bad, though. It's been a fun trip.

You list your location as Houghton.

Shouldn't this always be a huge problem for you?

Yeah I think this is one reason I was pretty down after the loss. England, France, and Italy get a relatively quick turn around for a shot at redemption in 2012. If we win the Gold Cup again, well we'll have won the Gold Cup again. I'd love to see a Copa America that actually took place over both continents in lieu of a Gold Cup, but that won't happen anytime soon.

Re: World Soccer XVI: The Sadness

Oh totally. I don't blame the assistant too much. Still, Blatter's stance on video technology is ridiculous. Or, even if he doesn't want video, station an extra official behind the goal. Problem solved.

Can't blame the refs for that missed call. No reason FIFA can't have review for strictly ball over goal line issues.

At least now the rest of the world can understand how big of a scumbag Jorge Larrionda is.

Just curious, what made him a scumbag today? Not seeing the ball go over the line?

Roo was clearly on when lahm played the ball to him and the ref called him off, then lamps free kick was knocked down by a german arm which led to the first goal, and also Klose was four or five yards offsides on it. Defoe was on when he hit the bar but the linesman ruled him off. Right after that germany scored again. Germanys third goal was right a

Ummm that Lahm play was not clearly a played ball. It was deemed a deflection. The free kick hit a player's hand in front of his body and tucked against the body. If he moves the hand, it hits him. Good no call. And ok Defoe was onside...he didn't score. Again, the England defense was the problem.

There is no excuse for the ref and linesman missing the call.

Sure there is. I don't blame them one bit. Watching live, I didn't think it went in at first. Neither the ref or the linesman is lined up on the goal line. Blame FIFA for not having review.

So Neuer says that he tried and succeeded at conning the referee and he knew that the ball had crossed the line.

So he tried to grab the ball as quickly as possible.

Sigh.

Smart goalkeeping

Re: World Soccer XVI: The Sadness

Good time to be a U17-U20 defender for the US...think those guys are going to be getting some attention over the next few years?

Re: World Soccer XVI: The Sadness

If that's the case, why was Arena brought back after the 2002 cup? I think the situations are similar. All I'm looking for is consistency. Let's build off this knockout stage result and do our best to improve on that in 2014. If Bradley isn't the guy, do we venture outside the safe choice of an American coach?

Re: World Soccer XVI: The Sadness

Is this the time to get Jurgen Klinsmann? He was rumored to be the new coach before Bradley was named.

Re: World Soccer XVI: The Sadness

...and who has the control over Gulati? How long has he been president?

Re: World Soccer XVI: The Sadness

So, here's my story.

I have a family reunion out of town Saturday that I can't miss. I tape the game and somehow manage to avoid finding out the result [that should have been my first clue that we lost]. I get home Sunday afternoon and my wife tells me the TV box is broken. I laugh and compliment her of the good joke, but quickly realize she is serious. Not only is the game not taped, none of the quarterfinals are taped and the TV doesn't work so I can't tape today's action either. :(

Is this some sort of Karma gone horribly wrong?

As for the US, we gave up goals in the 4th, 5th, and 13th minute of our loss and ties. We gave Algeria the chance to do the same and they didn't convert, so we beat them.

It will be very interesting to see what this team looks like in four years. Beyond Dempsey, Donovan and maybe Bradley or Davies, we could be looking at a lot of new faces come 2014.

Re: World Soccer XVI: The Sadness

This, of course, is the key. Will Gulati bring in someone who might disagree with him? That was apparently the rift between him and Klinsmann in '06 - control over player development.

Since then, a lot has changed in the US Soccer landscape. MLS is growing and has had much more success in signing homegrown talent through their academies.

If the situations are similar, then we're due for a crash out of the groups in 2014. Arena was brought back in '02, and the results next time around were disastrous. Domenech had success in '06, France embarrassed in '10. Lippi wins it in '06, Italy goes out early in '10. I really think being the national team coach is a one shot deal.

I don't necessarily think we need a non-American, I do think we need someone who hasn't been involved with MLS in a while though though.

Re: World Soccer XVI: The Sadness

I'm sure Fabio Capello will be available soon. :D

Just kidding, I'd love to see Klinsmann coaching the team. Although, I'm puzzled why we need to let go off Bradley.

Re: World Soccer XVI: The Sadness

http://voices.washingtonpost.com/soccerinsider/2010/06/sunil_gulati_discusses_us_brad.html

Sunil Gulati quotes from today. Seems to be saying the right things, Goff says he gets the impression he's leaning towards letting Bradley go.

my perception is that teams and countries have become enamored with the concept of hiring high profile managers...I don't think the idea of bringing in an international name for that sake alone is the best way to go...

It boils down to basic business logic:

  • - what are the strengths and weaknesses of the current squad (people who will be around for 2014 and the younger guys)
  • - is Bradley the guy to manage those strengths and weaknesses - can he alter the approach to address any of the team's/his weaknesses (new assistants etc)
  • - is there somebody available that would be better? (this is a key issue, teams frequently fire their current guy without a clear sight into who would be available and better)

We've made great progress considering where we were 20 years ago...I know we want to win it all now but hope that we don't get into the Jerry Jones mode of changing everything after a disappointment such that every few years it is a whole new system etc.

I don't know, while I do see the pattern I just don't see why there's any causal relationship between 2006 being Arena's second World Cup (to pick the one I'm most familiar with) and a "disastrous" (I'm not even sure that's the right word; we had an awful group and still had a decent shot to advance until we got hosed by the ref with that Ghana PK) performance.

Re: World Soccer XVI: The Sadness

This was a "disastrous" performance? We should have been second in group and been dispatched by a powerful team in the round of 16, instead we won the group but then lost to an overachieving second-tier team in the round of 16.

It's disappointing to lose when it looks like you have a path forward (frickin' Bemidji) but that seems like at least a par.

Edit: excuse me, I just reread that post and it was 2006 that was supposedly disastrous. So, uh... never mind.
