World Soccer XVI: The Sadness

Re: World Soccer XVI: The Sadness

Way to completely screw Mexico. I don't feel that bad for them but Jesus these refs are making NBA refs look competent.

David Stern is going to start mining FIFA for talent.

Re: World Soccer XVI: The Sadness

I question your basic understanding of soccer if you think Klose was offsides on the first goal. It was off of a goal kick. (I missed it but it appears to be a goal kick at least). Maybe i'm wrong on that account.

It was off a goal kick so couldn't be offside. Just pathetic defense by Upson whose errors were responsible for 3/4 of Germany's goals.

For the goal that should have counted, whatever. I don't see England scoring a second goal, so we would have lost on penalties, since there is no way in hell England is going to beat Germany on penalties.

There is no excuse for the ref and linesman missing the call.

Re: World Soccer XVI: The Sadness

We are seeing some really good football here. Argentina is looking strong, Germany is coming on at the right time.

My Bracket had Brasil vs. Argentina in the final, and my what a dream final that would be for most fans.

Re: World Soccer XVI: The Sadness

So Neuer says that he tried and succeeded at conning the referee and he knew that the ball had crossed the line.

So he tried to grab the ball as quickly as possible.

Sigh.

Re: World Soccer XVI: The Sadness

In non World Cup news: Philadelphia Union are about to open up PPL Park against the Seattle Sounders on ESPN2.

MLS is only a rumor until the Timbers begin play in 2011, at which point it becomes Vitally Important. :)

Re: World Soccer XVI: The Sadness

That said, it was amusing to see David Beckham on the sidelines all dolled up in a designer suit. Dude - you're there at the World Cup supporting your national team. Wear something team related.

He is! That's the official formal uniform, made this year by Marks & Spencer.

Re: World Soccer XVI: The Sadness

I've been away from my computer most of the weekend, but I'll pass along this initial observation in hopes of providing more details later on.

I knew that it was going to be Argentina's day today when the pastor of the church I attended (not a soccer fan) preached a sermon entitled "The Hand of God."

Yeah, I watched the replay on that one and I was wrong. However, two lamps free kicks were blocked down with arms and I think both would've been on goal. I still think Roo being called offsides in the first 10 minutes was what really hurt england.

What are people's thoughts on Roo? I think he must've been hurt. I didn't see him put one challenge in the entire tournament. At first I thought it was because of him being afraid of getting booked but it seems to me now that there must be something wrong with his ankle and he was afraid of aggravating it. I've had ankle injuries myself and they take forever to heal. I think with Roo, Rio, and Hargo at 100% england would've had a pretty good shot but they were never going win it all with that lot they had out there today.

Re: World Soccer XVI: The Sadness

Just got back from opening of PPL Park - Philly Union.

Great stadium. Today it was HOT. They were running out of water to sell. No truth to the rumor that they were filling up bottles from the Delaware River.

Exciting game...3-1 Union.

Lots of people needing assistance due to the heat.

Large numbers of people brought kids under the age of 3...borderline cruelty to have little kids out there in 100 degrees and sunshine.

Getting out of the lots, and through the lovely city of Chester, with its recently installed curfew from 9pm-6am due to the rise in murders, was a real challenge. It is great they put the stadium down there but getting in and out reminds me of Memorial Stadium in Baltimore...weaving through neighborhoods and sitting in traffic.

I'll see if any of our pictures are worthy and then post them

Re: World Soccer XVI: The Sadness

Rumor has it Man City wants Lando. I guess he'll be getting this.

I guess I will be hating Donovan if he goes there. COME ON UNITED!

Re: World Soccer XVI: The Sadness

Seriously, FIFA... Get a freakin' goal judge, already.

Not that I'm disappointed, since I was pulling for the Germans, but that really is shameful that FIFA refuses to fix what is clearly an inadequate system.

When an official can get a call that wrong and we have no reason to blame him, the system is f*ed.

On another note, I wasn't around to get everyone's response to the US-Ghana match. My thoughts: what a shame that we went out that way. On one hand, you must congratulate Ghana for taking advantage of our mistakes, but those two goals happened because of really poor mistakes on our part.

It's really frustrating to see something like that happen. Especially the ET goal. We expect Ricardo Clark to screw up. But DeMerit and Bocanegra? Talk about the wrong places at the wrong time.

I think fatigue and fitness seemed to be an issue. Everyone just looked gassed, and even before ET I felt that there was a serious lack of people moving their feet. Poor Dempsey looked like he was ready to die by the end of it.

I was also annoyed by the deliberate time wasting and excessive theatrics by Ghana... but as was noted in the play-by-play: pretty much every team would do the same if they were up 2-1 in ET.

And now we start to look forward to 2014 (oh, and the Gold Cup, if that matters). Who's played their last World Cup?

So everyone's a winner!

Everyone except England and Mexico.

Re: World Soccer XVI: The Sadness

What's the over/under on the day Fabio Capello gets whacked by the English FA? I'm taking bets and starting a pool. Odds are it's Tuesday/Wednesday.

Re: World Soccer XVI: The Sadness

Well, what goalie hasn't tired to pull a puck or a ball out of the goal before everybody else sees it?

I think it was kind of heads up by Neuer actually. I think a goalkeeper who was thinking more rashly might have petulantly punted the ball somewhere, letting the referee know something was up.

Ha, you can't even figure out how to design a crest properly.

The Gold Cup does kind of matter, with the winner getting a birth to the Confederations Cup. I do think that is an important tournament, if only because it gets you to the host country a year early to get acclimated.

As for who's gone:
Demerit for sure. Probably Bocanegra. Cherundolo as well. Maybe Onyewu? All due to age.
Hopefully Findley, Clark, Bornstein won't see another cup. Nothing against them, just if they're left home, that would mean that better players have been found to replace them.

Re: World Soccer XVI: The Sadness

Hell, they would probably want him to commit seppako for what happened at the WC, draws against USA and Algeria, didn't win the pool to get the easier path to the cup, losing and getting whooped by Germany. It's not done.

Findley was on the roster due to Charlie Davies absence. Hopefully for the Gold Cup and the future, this won't be a problem and he can return to Real Salt Lake and hopefully get better. Or stay the same and never put on a US jersey again.

Onyweu will be 32, along with Donvocan and Dempsey (31), i still think they can get good production out of those guys. Are midfield is looking solid for the next cycle and if Davies and Altidore can blossom, the forward line may not be bad either. Our defense will have to be rebuilt, but its not like that was our strength anyway.

Speaking strictly in terms of Brazil 2014:

It's almost an interesting question on defense who will stay. Only Spector and Bornstein will still be in their 20s come Brazil. And I would really only expect Spector to be among the top candidates after this go around. He'll get plenty of seasoning while he's still with Wet Spam.

I thought DeMerit and Bocanegra kept us in this thing as best they could, but at 34 and 35, one has to assume that they're gone. Of the rest of the defense, Onyewu is clearly our best defender, and he'll be 32.

I'm also unsure what the future holds for us at forward, although strikers seem to develop and fade so quickly that it seems tough to predict that four years down the line. As of today, it would seem that we'll have Jozy and... uh... Jozy. That's assuming that we don't move Charlie Davies to midfield. Maybe Freddy Adu if he shapes up.

I think we're set in midfield and goal. A few will drop in and out of the picture, but between Howard and Guzan, I can't us imagining us having to worry. Between Bradley, Holden, Torres, Edu and maybe Davies, I think we'll be set in midfield. That goes double if Dempsey and Donovan still have something in the tank.
