World Soccer XVI: The Sadness

Re: World Soccer XVI: The Sadness

My guess is that the assistant didn't see the ball come of Tevez's head. Really the only explanation.

Re: World Soccer XVI: The Sadness

Ohhhhh...the ref is from Italy....that helps explain it.

Re: World Soccer XVI: The Sadness

No you should read it as: I know FIFA isn't going to make some sweeping change to their systems (extra ref, replay, etc.). So why not start with the most important event the sport has and go from there.

They're not going to institute an extra ref or a replay, but we should add it to the biggest soccer / futbol / football tournament in the world.

Ball going over the line or not is a clear cut easy to review item.

Which is why there should be an extra ref / goal judge. You don't even have to call him a 5th / 6th ref. Call him a goal judge, just like hockey does.

Hand ball is subjective call. So while Ireland has a gripe, its not guaranteed an extra ref calls it the other way.

I didn't mention hand balls. I don't care about hand balls.

Offsides, again mostly subjective unless its a mile off and those are rarely missed.
Offsides by a kilometer.
.

Cards, again subjective. Replay isn't going to help with that, and another ref may just agree with the existing call.

I'm not saying that they wouldn't just agree with the existing call. I'm not saying that we need to institute video replay. But, after watching Kaka getting sent off, and seeing Dempsey not even being booked against Algeria (just to mention two of multiple), there should be some extra body to rule on cards other than just the ref on the field.

Confed Cup has never been that important. Considering invitees have skipped it completely before I'm not the only one who thinks that. It's only important to Americans now because it happen to be televised and they did well. Going forward it may become more important, but who knows.

WC Qualifier? Domestic leagues? There are other levels to which these rules / changes can be implemented without suddenly popping it on everybody in the biggest tournament every four years.

Re: World Soccer XVI: The Sadness

Holy hell, I left to go to lunch / Toy Story at Germany 1-nil and there have been 8 goals in 1.5 games since then? Wha-- happen?

Re: World Soccer XVI: The Sadness

I think pardonme make a good point. What about World Cup qualifiers? Tell ireland they aren't as important. Now try to implement these changes to game is the heart of africa where they can barely afford it as is.

I'm not opposed to putting fifth and six officials on the opposite sides of the goal from the sideline refs. But video replay? No.

Give every country the option of either video replay on goals or paying two more dudes a bushel of arrows, a bucket of fish, or whatever their currency is to watch the goal lines?

Re: World Soccer XVI: The Sadness

I'm not sure who #6 is on argentina but I'd like to punch him in the throat myself.

Re: World Soccer XVI: The Sadness

In non World Cup news: Philadelphia Union are about to open up PPL Park against the Seattle Sounders on ESPN2.

I'll only watch if you can guarantee that the referee will make at least five mistakes.

I'm not going to bother arguing about cards/fouls. That's a waste of time. It's not changing, even if goal review did. I only mentioned hand balls because someone mentioned Ireland (oddly I don't think it was Mountie  )

Mistakes by refs can be overcome in league play and to some extent in qualifiers, because there are multiple games to play. So it makes no sense to implement the changes first in league play where it will have the least effect. Over the course of the season those mistakes probably even out for teams.

In tournaments where you want a fair winner and its 1-and-done, that's where the most effect can be had.

Either way, nothing is going to happen. So there is no winner, only losers. :p
