World Soccer XVI: The Sadness

Re: World Soccer XVI: The Sadness

I'd like to hear your predictions about the Quarterfinals.

A. Game most likely to end 3-2.

B. Game most likely to end 0-0.

C. Leading goal scorer.

D. Player most likely to be red carded.

Extra bonus points for fun comments. :)

A. Tough one, but I'll say Argentina-Germany. Both have scored in bunches, but have defenses that can be prone to mistakes.

B. Easiest prediction imo, Uruguay-Ghana. Both have been offensively challenged at times and if Forlan and Suarez are off, 0-0 is possible. I

C. Villa. he's been a scoring machine so far and Paraguay hasn't impressed me at all. I could see him knocking them for a hat trick.

D. Kaka. Man seems to be a card machine these days for some reason.

A. Germany - Argentina. With time ticking away, Coach Maradona calls his own number and enters the game, only to give up a terrible giveaway for the German winning goal.

B. Uraguay - Ghana. Niether team will want to make the first mistake, so the teams take turns playing keep-away for 10 minutes. The only shot on goal will be the last penalty kick.

C. Ozil - He will pick apart a Argentina defense that is still untested.

D. Can I say Diego Maradona?

Stat of the world cup: The USA led for a total of 206 seconds in all four matches.

Even so, they won their group for the first time since 1930, which is progress.

All we need now is some better finishers, ball handlers, defenders and goaltending.;)

But other than that Mrs Lincoln, how was the play?

Re: World Soccer XVI: The Sadness

fwiw, I heard that MC is interested in Donovan.

It would be bad for him to go to Man City since he won't get to play very much at all.

Everton is a good place for him to go, high level of competition, manager likes him already, good system in place.

You're probably right, I just thought it was worth mentioning the mention.

Let me ask - does Donovan retain the drive/physical skills/stamina to make the WC drive for 2014?

I think so for 2014, he had a chip on his shoulder about how 2006 went and in his eyes I'm sure he still has the same feeling about 2010 because he knows they had a chance to really influence american sports fans and push American soccer to a new level. I'm sure he will want to be a part of the next world cup to see if he can pull it off.

As for Donovan's club future, I'd like to see him with Everton full time, for whatever reason I've kinda picked Everton as my EPL team and he seemed to fit right in there. TBA has it right.

It's one of the things that hurts England, the top youth players seem to be bought by the top clubs and then completely ignored, rarely getting a chance to be blooded into those clubs. Then after their development window closes, they go to smaller clubs and try to work their way back. Instead they shouldn't be going to the big clubs to begin with: they should stick with the smaller clubs where you get to actually PLAY.

Even guys who have "made" it, like Scott Parker...what did moving to Chelsea do for his career? It destroyed it.

Playing is the most important thing, not wages. But players today are just greedy.

Re: World Soccer XVI: The Sadness

A. Game most likely to end 3-2. Brazil vs. Netherlands. Despite Dunga's wanting for the Samba Boys to be defensive. I think the Dutch score early and force Brazil out of their defensiveness and we have free flowing football with the Clockwork Orange winning. (I'm calling the upset.)

B. Game most likely to end 0-0. Uruguay-Ghana. This is one could the cure for insomnia. Ghana will prove that its performance against the US was a complete fluke.

C. Leading goal scorer- Lionel Messi. He gets off the schnide and gets a double. Maradonna celebrates by eating all the schnitzel in Germany.

D. Player most likely to be red carded. Puyol.... for that awful hairdo.

C. Leading goal scorer. Luis Fabiano

D. Player most likely to be red carded. Someone from the Germany/Argentina game...that is going to be a barn burner with a LOT of emotion after 2006.

Re: World Soccer XVI: The Sadness

Ugh - another off day.

For fun - what's the best goal of the tournament so far, and what criteria do you base that on?

For me, this one is the best, and my criteria is that I enjoyed it the most (given that I was watching with about 15 England fans).
:D

Re: World Soccer XVI: The Sadness

Either of Donovan's goals.

Criteria - more personal impact since it was my team, which created more sheer awesome. The first one just because he basically just walked right up to the goal and stuffed it in... that's basically throwing your nuts on the table.

The second one needs no explanation. Nothing fancy about it, in fact, like the game itself it wasn't really that impressive, but the drama is what you'll remember.

Had this conversation with a friend last week. The Algeria win isn't even close to the most significant win in US Soccer history, nor the most important, but there's no question it was the most dramatic, given the circumstances of failure and the drastic, last-second difference it made.

Ultimately, even though we were out after the Round of 16... we still preferred Ghana to Germany. Come on.

I'm not still talking about best goals, am I?

Re: World Soccer XVI: The Sadness

You're dead to me, Liverpool. Dead. I hope you lose every match to Everton and Manchester United for the rest of eternity.

A. Brazil-Netherlands
B. Spain-Paraguay —*If Spain doesn't show up a la the Switzerland game, Paraguay can gum up the works like no other.
C. Fabiano.
D. At this point, who knows? Cards have been almost completely random this tournament, it seems.

Re: World Soccer XVI: The Sadness

A. Game most likely to end 3-2. - Argentina-Germany

B. Game most likely to end 0-0. Paraguay-Spain -It's what Paraguay does
C. Leading goal scorer. - Messi

D. Player most likely to be red carded. - A Ghanaian, likely Kevin Prince Boateng
