World Soccer XVI: The Sadness

Re: World Soccer XVI: The Sadness

I'd like to hear your predictions about the Quarterfinals.

A. Game most likely to end 3-2.

B. Game most likely to end 0-0.

C. Leading goal scorer.

D. Player most likely to be red carded.

Extra bonus points for fun comments. :)

A. I'm going with Netherlands-Brazil here. I could see Brazil getting up 2-0, losing focus and having to rally to a win after a couple second half Dutch goals.

B. Uruguay-Ghana. Neither side wants to make the mistake that will lose the game. This could be truly ugly.

C. Mesut Özil. I just got a feeling. As mentioned earlier, this is likely to be a surprise name. If not, it's hard to bet against David Villa.

D. Diego Godín of Uruguay, Carlos Tevez or Enrique Vera of Chile.

I find it interesting how Diego Maradona has quietly gone from fool to genius.

Re: World Soccer XVI: The Sadness

Bill Simmons on the World Cup.

I don't read his columns (or listen to his podcasts) often, because he usually comes off as your typical "let's be honest, I really only know what I'm talking about in Basketball and Baseball, and I'm a sucker for populism in sports... if this were a music website, I'd probably write about American Idol all the time and then insult everything else because I'm ignorant" sort of ****** you see all the time in comments sections on ESPN articles.

But this one was actually a good read for me. My favorite part comes at the end:

It was a great column that captured the sense of a growing relationship between Americans and it's national soccer team and a newly-felt appreciation for the sport.

I think the one aspect of all this World Cup that no one is talking about is how the advent of HD television has helped soccer gain acceptance among casual USA sports fans. The HD broadcasts really help casual fans to truly see the incredible skills, athleticism and the physical nature of the game in a way many of them hadn't seen it before. Seeing a Messi stepover, a Clint Dempsey's bloody mouth, and the HD slow motion curl of a well -placed shot is elevating the perception of game. Even my 76 year-old dad, who last watched soccer when I played high school soccer back in the stone age, is now hooked on this tournament. Of course HD also reveals referee incompetence and diving/fake injuries as never before, either - and I think those things are also going to change as a result....

Re: World Soccer XVI: The Sadness

Ives just posted a blog selecting his guess for the 23 men to go to Brazil for the US in 2014:
SBI's Projected USA World Cup Roster for 2014 said:
GOALKEEPER- Tim Howard, Brad Guzan, Chris Seitz

DEFENDERS- Oguchi Onyewu, Jonathan Spector, Jonathan Bornstein, Tim Ream, Omar Gonzalez, Ike Opara, Kevin Alston, Kofi Sarkodie

MIDFIELDERS- Landon Donovan, Michael Bradley, Stuart Holden, Maurice Edu, Benny Feilhaber, Jose Francisco Torres, Alejandro Bedoya, Sacha Kljestan

FORWARDS- Jozy Altidore, Clint Dempsey, Charlie Davies, Yura Movsisyan

Re: World Soccer XVI: The Sadness

That midfield is almost exactly the same as what we had this year - but then, our midfield actually wasn't that bad this year, so long as it was some composed of some combination of Donovan, Dempsey, Bradley, Edu and Feilhaber. I think Holden also could do the job and Torres will grow into it. JLKJLKJestan... meh.

I agree, I was surprised that all the midfielders he listed were part of the 30-man group selected. I have a feeling there will be one or 2 new faces in the midfield and I hope we don't need a guy like Kljestan.

What the heck is that supposed to be?

The Pope of the Rising Sun?
Either way its Japanese for sure, so we probably don't want to know unless we want to be horriably mentally scarred for life from it. ;)

Re: World Soccer XVI: The Sadness

I caught that too, the guy in question is actually on the Paraguay

Thanks for catching that guys. I don't know why I wrote Chile when I knew it was Paraguay. That guy is so getting a red card now. ;)

If you wan to see a scary good roster for 2014, take a look at a projected Germany roster. 2018 could be even better.

Partially used tampon.

In other news...

U.S. Soccer president Sunil Gulati says he hasn't made a decision yet on whether to have the U.S. drop out of bidding to host the 2018 World Cup so it can concentrate on 2022.

"I am feeling good about things, but not taking anything for granted," he said. "I understand the sentiment about 2018 being in Europe and we will do what is in our interests at the right time, and if that means focusing on one or the other, we will do that at the right time. I don't see any reason to do that now. We've talked with the appropriate people at FIFA leadership, and they are comfortable with that as well. ... I don't think we are going to know (whether the U.S. will win the bid) with any certainty until very late in the game."

$20 says Sunil doesn't drop 2018 and retains Bradley as well. Lesser odds on Don Garber kicking him in the face, but he should.

Re: World Soccer XVI: The Sadness

I'm hoping Lichaj can come along enough to start at left back for us in 2014.

As for Bradley, I really hope he gets a European offer. That way, US Soccer doesn't have to let him go, we can shake his hand, say "Good job.", and move on.

Bradley's entire tenue was OK, but thats no reason to do the rather unusual thing of extending a national team coach for a second cycle. Did we learn nothing from the Bruce Arena era?

That's nearly exactly my position, but I still would feel rather icky if we had to decline to renew his contract without him having somewhere to go. A European offer allows both Bradley and US Soccer to move on to bigger and better things in my opinion.

In related news, a new Nike Soccer ad. Pretty good imo.

I'm not normally very sentimental, but that was just plain awesome.

I would hope Gulati is holding his cards for some sort of deal that would bring us a 2022 or 2026 Cup. Of course that would leave me wondering if I will still be alive. Also, I could see him playing for some sort of anti-Europe backlash in 2018 voting. The votes could be there. Platini got elected by UEFA, didn't he?

Re: World Soccer XVI: The Sadness

Well, I had the Netherlands beating Brazil in the QFs before the Cup started. I'll stick with that. 2-1 in extra time.

Re: World Soccer XVI: The Sadness

The English FA has decided Capello will be allowed to stick around for 2 more years of failure.
