World Soccer XV: Diver Down

Re: World Soccer XV: Diver Down

You mean the Dance of Joy from Perfect Strangers?

It took England two games to figure out Heskey sucks, perhaps they deserve to miss out because Capello is a dope.

Watching Heskey play for Villa since he joined, I was surprised to see him start for the three lions.

They say the people he plays with score more goals when he is on the field...I have two possible explanations: he does nothing so the other guy feels compelled to shoot more OR nobody looking for an assist passes to him since the only time he moves quickly is when he is exaggerating a foul or injury.

One more explanation, Gabby is a far better striker than he gets credit for and Heskey is out there when Carew isn't

Re: World Soccer XV: Diver Down

My thoughts on the size of the tournament.

I know this may sound crazy, but from a fans perspective, I think the World Cup is too big. There are too many games squeezed into too few days. I'd be happy with a 16 team tournament so we could go back to one or two games a day and some real quality games.

As a compromise, I think it would be fun to pair up all the teams and have them all play a two match series over the first four or five days of the tournament. The sixteen winners would enter the group stage. That first week would be crazy, but it would settle down pretty quick.

16 teams and series of games really eliminates the chance for upsets. It also just eliminates more European teams from the chance to be in the tournament. Because if each continent is guaranteed 1 or 2 bids minimum + possibly being the host you have already filled 10 slots (2 SA, 2 NCC, 2 AF, 2 AS, 2 EU, 1 OC, 1 host).

24 or 32 is more ideal. If it got bigger then it might be overwhelming.

Re: World Soccer XV: Diver Down

I love when England loses, so I'm cheering for Slovenia. They make some real good food. At least the Slovenian-Americans I know do.

I think Heskey plays at forward because England is no better at producing strikers than they are goalkeepers. He's not that good, but he's the best they got.

Spending the next four years reminding Englishmen we advanced out of their group and they didn't seems like a lot of fun to me. :D :D

Personally, I wouldn't have missed Greece, Slovakia, Denmark, Slovenia and France [except for the comic relief].

I'm happy with the current set-up, but as a fan it is overwhelming. Has anyone seen every game? Has anyone seen every game they've wanted to?

I've seen every game (-1). Its 2010, get a DVR. :D

Oh and Denmark is a quality side. They just had a tough tournament. Plus they can still advance.

A third explanation would be that he actually does have something to do with it, like for instance he set up the only goal England has scored so far in the tournament.

Re: World Soccer XV: Diver Down

Oh my, the US team is a doozy.

Howard; Bornstein, Demerit, Bocanegra, Cherundolo; Donovan, Bradley, Edu, Dempsey; Altidore, Gomez

That's one heck of a gamble by Bob.

I'm good with these changes. The only one I would question is using Gomez as a starter instead of a sub.

If Onyewu is struggling, why not sit him.

Apparently Jozy was sick the other day, so I hope that doesn't effect him.

Can you explain this to we less soccer-knowledgeable?

How so? Can you break it down for those of us stuck at work unable to do our own research?

Thanks...

Johnathan Bornstein is a rather polarizing figure. In many peoples' opinion, he's a walking mistake machine. In others, he's a decent left back. I fall firmly into the former, but like I said, it goes both ways.

JF, I'm fine with replacing Onyewu, but I'd rather have seen Goodson slotting into the center, rather than Bornstein presumably going out left and pushing Boca inside.

Re: World Soccer XV: Diver Down

What are everyone's opinions on Bornstein vs. Gooch? Onyewu's struggles aside, what does Bornstein really offer? I'll shamefully confess ignorance here. As much as I've been following the US team since the last Gold Cup, I must confess that I'm still learning the game and defense is probably the last position where I'm going to learn about our players.

I'm wondering if Bradley has a devious substitution plan for Gooch, depending on whether we're up or down at the half.

I'm actually a bigger Spector fan then Goodson. But I don't know if he is comfortable as a center back.

ETA: Plus Spector is only 6 ft tall. Goodson is like 6-4.

The thing is, Algeria really doesn't attack down the center of the field much. Nearly all of their attacks come down the wings, so Bornstein is very much going to be in the line of fire. Now, he should be able to get some help from Edu, but still.

As for what Bornstein offers, he does have more pace than Bocanegra, so he has that going for him.
