World Soccer XV: Diver Down

Re: World Soccer XV: Diver Down

So for the second round Argentina meets Mexico in Soccer City, South Korea meets Uruguay in Port Elizabeth and England meets France at the airport.:D

Re: World Soccer XV: Diver Down

So if I have this figured correctly, go on/go home decisions between US/England (not likely)and Italy/New Zealand (quite possible) could be decided by drawing lots. I'd love to see New Zealand beat Italy in a coin flip or rock-paper-scissors or however they decide it.

Ha, I'm skeptical. Unless the coin toss was televised with reps from both sides there, I'd never believe New Zealand would win the toss.

Why not just expand the tournement to 40 teams?? Keep the pools and just have them be 5 teams in the pools instead of just four teams. Top 2 in each pool advances. This year alone you would have gotten in Ireland, and a few other good traveling countries and their fanbases as well. Columbia perhaps, another African team like Egypt, and I'm sure the collective could rattle off a more squads who just missed out on getting to the big dance. Given the availabilty of great venues in the USA, it might be worth throwing that idea out with the upcoming USA bid for the World Cup. FIFA did pretty good for itself when they were here in 94, with 48 pool games played. Imagine how they would do with 80 pool games played. Yeah, would likely add about another week to the tournament, but the USA is the one place where you could have a matches starting at say 9am EDT, and have the last one finishing up at say around Midnight at PDT. Lots of venues over a lot of time zones.

I like the idea of having a few more teams as well. I think 40 would be as high as I would go.

Let's say the US is up 2-0 or 3-0 at half, does Bradley even think about replacing Howard to protect him and his ribs to get to the round of 16?

I don't think we'll have that problem. I'm more concerned with not giving up the first goal and hopefully scoring before halftime.

Re: World Soccer XV: Diver Down

A lot of questions/jokes about Maradona coming into the tournament. I know Argentina's one of the most talented teams in the field, but so is England. Have to give him some credit for how they've looked.

I don't see them ever going to 5 team groups because then you'd have to involve byes in the schedule because all 5 teams can't play the same day. Right now everyone has the same amount of rest, within a day, as every other team they face "next."

Look at how happy everyone is when Palermo scores. The coaches, the trainers, the players on the pitch and on the bench. Argentina is playing like a team, while England is playing like 11 individuals who hate each other.

It doesn't help that some of them do hate each other ;)

Good point, didn't think about that. You'd have to have an even number of teams in each group. How about 36 teams? Six groups of six with five group matches...too much?

re: Terry

I know he's a very good defender, but I laugh when I see him out there. He doesn't look like an athlete...looks like your average 40 year old man.

The advance would be awkward. If 16 go through that sets up wild cards which are not fair considering the imbalance between groups. So then you get into byes and that means having to rank order the group leaders... yuck.

8 groups of 6 would set up 5 game round robins extending the tournament for another week, but it would also probably means nobody would go through without a winning record, which would be nice. Those 33 through 48 though... Gabon, Burkina Faso, wheeee. (It could get the Latvians in, though, and they're always a blast.)

I would take Italy.

Never go against a Sicilian when death is on the line. :D

Just draw lots...

Re: World Soccer XV: Diver Down

Just get every team in the world for a crazy 6 month long single elimination tournament.

You could got with 7 groups of 6 then the round of 16 could be the 7 winners plus the top #2 vs the 6 remaining #2s and the top 2 #3s.

Re: World Soccer XV: Diver Down

Too bad Nigeria couldn't pull it out, would've been nice if they had.

Did anyone else think Argentina's first goal came off Milito's hand? Not with any intent, and I don't think you could distinguish live that it was his hand and not his midsection, but if you were watching in slow motion I think it would've been blown dead. Rough break for the Greeks.

Still, they're absolutely dreadful to watch, and it's a more entertaining tournament without them, sorry to say.

Maradona... man, say what you want about his personal issues, but he is fun to watch on the sideline, wearing his emotions on his sleeve like that. Plus his jewelry is hilarious.

Could someone get Ally McCoist a throat lozenge?

Re: World Soccer XV: Diver Down

Looked like the director of the FIFA feed noticed it later on since they were showing it in slow motion afterward, but the commentators didn't mention it.
