Re: World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

OH MY!

Van Persie sent off!!!!!! He is called for offsides, shoots well wide anyways, gets his second yellow! That's horrible, and I hate Arsenal.

Just saw it, what an awful awful awful decision.

Re: World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

Glad we cancelled satellite TV so I don't spend time watching rubbish like this referee.

They are reporting that there was one second between the whistle and Van Persie's shot, and he's sent off for that. Who is this clown referee anyways?

Yep, one second.

Re: World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

Not surprisingly, Busacca's Wikipedia page has already been vandalized:

"Busacca enjoys skiing and tennis, travelling, fonduing, and watching his beloved F.C. Barcelona."

(FWIW, Busacca also reffed the 2009 CL Final between Barcelona and ManU.)

Re: World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

And now a soft penalty, Barca 4-3. Messi with a illegal penalty, he stopped in the run up then started again.

Re: World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

jmh- no, I don't think so. But I think in three years or so, he will be up there.

tba- started from a foul or no, beautiful runup. 16 passes.

third goal was a clear penalty, no argument from Arsenal.

Re: World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

Messi converts a PK after Koscielny fouls Pedro in the box. Man, that sending-off is a huge turning point. For a guy who gets big matches, Busacca seems to be in the middle of a lot of weird situations.

If by weird situations you mean on the take and or brutally incompetent, then yes, he gets in the middle of a lot of weird situations.

I don't think there was anything soft about the penalty, it was a clear take down in the box. If anything, he showed proper restraint by not showing a card, as the ball had been played sideways and there was no real scoring opportunity.

The sending off, obviously, was horrible.

Re: World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

Sounds like Almunia is making some great saves, despite the scoreline.

Re: World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

84' and Barcelona continue to throw guys forward despite having the lead. (Alves seems to keep getting in great spaces and then do nothing.) I think Arsenal are going to counter and score.

Re: World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

Bendtner had the best chance to score, but it ends 3-1 FT and Barca moves on.

I hope that's the last game Busacca ever refs, how many chances does the guy get to bungle things.

Whenever I see a situation where the guy could just as easily avoid the planted foot but instead tumble theatrically over it...I think 2006 World Cup and the Italian theatrically diving over the outstretched leg of the Australian defender deep in injury time. It's not a stone cold penalty for me. It's a foul and a penalty but it's soft because the guy had to sell it by flying through the air like Lee Harvery Oswald had just shot him in the knee.

It's hard to like Barca because while they are so fun to watch, there is a lot of diving like Messi selling a 50-50 challenge between him and one of the Arsenal defenders where the guy got the ball and Messi rolled around on the ground. It's unnecessary, they can win without it.

Re: World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

Does anyone feel that Barca's Super Fun Happy Catalonian Song is eerily catchy?

You're kidding, right? Watching Messi is like watching a zombie, he almost always fights through challenges where other players would go to the ground. If you search Youtube using "messi dive" as your search terms you get videos about how he never dives.

Re: World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

Also, I know it's a little pithy to say now, and I do feel for Arsenal fans, but in all this *****ing about the ref it's worth noting that Arsenal wouldn't have even been playing Barcelona if they could have taken care of Braga in the group stage.

Re: World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

There's no way that was an illegal penalty. He certainly slowed down, but that's different from a stop.

I think it's enough to warrant ungentlemanly conduct. It's such a gray area for penalties. I really hated the rule change they made in 2000.

AWFUL call.

Pompey lost today 2-1. First loss and goals conceded in 7 games.

They also got shot 20-0 today. Tough to have a ton of sympathy there.
