Re: World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

Despite Liverpool not being as good as normal, I am excited about Blackburn getting the 3-1 win over them and moving up to 9th.

Whoops.
The 2022 World Cup in Qatar will probably be staged in January rather than June or July, FIFA president Sepp Blatter said for the first time on Friday.

Speaking to a media roundtable in the Qatari capital before the opening match of the Asian Cup, he said: "I expect it will be held in the winter.

"We have time to look at this question, it is still 11 years away but we must decide the most adequate period for a successful World Cup which means January or the end of the year."

Summer temperatures in Qatar can soar to over 40 degrees Celsius while those in the winter months are far more comfortable.

Blatter said that the Qatari football association is now responsible for organising the World Cup and they would work closely with FIFA in the years ahead to guarantee a successful tournament.

"Do not forget there is still 11 years to go and although we have the basic conditions of their bid for a June and July World Cup, the FIFA executive committee is entitled to change anything that was in the bid.

"When you play football you have to protect the main people, the players."

When the decision was announced last month to award Qatar the 2022 finals -- the first time the event has been held in the Middle East -- many observers were concerned the intense temperatures there which can top 50 Celsius would be unbearable for players and fans alike.

In January, the temperatures are usually between 20 and 30 Celsius.

Good luck getting any American sports media interest for futbol during the NFL playoffs.

Re: World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

Not to mention what UEFA thinks of it :p

Anyways, I'm skeptical as to if it really happens or not. I doubt ESPN will shell out anywhere near the sum they would for a summer tournament.

Why would the Mothership shell out anything for it? They have the NFL playoffs to cover as well as the BCS Championship, the NBA and college hoops to televise. They have no need for January programming. Soccer would just get in the way.

Yep. They might prefer it to be more late January to into febuary. Probaly would be ideal to at least have the knockout rounds starting after the superbowl.

I see your point, but keep in mind we're a whole twelve years away from that point. Who's to say ESPN Classic won't have morphed into ESPN3 by then? Or some other unforeseen situation. There's no way ESPN doesn't bid on the World Cup, I just don't think it will be as big a $ as it might be in the summer.

Also keep in mind with the games being in Asia, they'll be kicking off between 6am-12 noon. So, not literally head to head with the other sports.

They'll lowball it, and FIFA will sell all US rights to some spanish speaking channel for a billion, and for four years, the biggest event in the world will be on Telemundo or whatever half of the USMNT qualifying was on last time around.

Man, first countries other than Qatar will host games and now the Cup will be played 6 months earlier. I'm so glad those technical reports and their own **** bid book mentioned all these dramatic differences Qatar was proposing vis a vis other candidates.

Its worth noting Blatter and many of the sumbags currently sitting on the Executive Committee will, god willing, be dead or retired within a decade. They will likely be replaced with equally sleazy members, but possibly members with a different take on things.

That or they have gone to a full blown Ocho Channel as well. ;)

And I can't help but wonder what the bidding would've been like had the US gotten the Cup.

So maybe they'll be looking for fresh bribes from the Qataris?

And I can't help but wonder what the bidding would've been like had the US gotten the Cup.

ESPN/ABC bid $100M to broadcast the 2010 and 2014 Cups in English (They had paid only $40M for 2002 and 2006). Univision bid an additional $325M for the Spanish (They paid $150M for 2002 and 2006). ABC/ESPN and Univision both paid $11.5M for the 1994 Cup.

For games played in the USA I can't even begin to imagine how much they would've bid.

Re: World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

Arsenal gets a late PK to force a replay with Leeds. Rovers in a fight with QPR. Sunderland losing to Notts County. Doncaster struggling with Wolves and Bolton tied with York City. Gotta love FA Cup Round 3.

Re: World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

*******.

Pompey loses to Brighton & Hove Albion 3-1.

First loss in 3rd Round Proper for Pompey in 8 years.

Portsmouth went down to 10 men just 14 minutes in...on POMPEY'S free kick. Moronic.

Re: World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

Not getting upset in the third round is nice. :)

Re: World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

United get by the Pool 1-0 in the FA Cup. I do think Liverpool played better as a side with Daglish in charge. They won't finish 12th this year, trust me.

Re: World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

That was a dodgy penalty, Webb was way out of position and that was a world class dive. That said, the game was lost when Webb decided when Rafael did a two footed lunge it was barely worth a foul and yet when Gerrard did it he got a straight red. Makes perfect sense Webb!
