Unless I missed something, a 2 goal win over Algeria puts the US through.

Why? If England beats Algeria, but then ties with Slovenia, England and Slovenia would be through...the 2 goal differential still depends on what happens in England-Algeria.

No. Slovenia would have 5 points and a +1 GD. US would have +2 with a 2-goal win over Algeria. US advances.

A win over Algeria puts the US through as long as Algeria doesn't beat England and someone wins in the Slovenia/England game.

I believe that this is correct regardless of what happens in the other matches.

Also no.

England over Algeria. England ties Slovenia 2-2 (or higher). US beats Algeria 1-0.

England, Slovenia, US all tied with 5 points. Slovenia and US both have a +1 GD. Slovenia scored more goals. They advance.

A 2-goal US win guarantees advancement. Funky things can happen in the England-Algeria game which makes it easier, but a 2-goal win is the only thing currently guaranteeing them the knockout rounds.

If that happens, England, Slovenia, and U.S. all have 5 points. U.S. would be +2 with a 2-goal win over Algeria, Slovenia would be +1.

Assuming a 2-goal win over Algeria, U.S. would have 5 points, +2 GD, and (at least) 5 goals scored:

England W, W means Slovenia L = England 7 points, U.S. 5, Slovenia 4 - U.S. through.
England W, T means Slovenia T - 5-5-5 = U.S. through on goal differential over Slovenia.
England W, L means Slovenia W = Slovenia 7, U.S. 5, England 4 = U.S. through and England out.

If England ties or loses to Algeria today, then any W by the U.S. over Algeria puts them through (because then either England finishes with 2 or fewer points, or Slovenia finishes with 4 - either way, the U.S. would have 5 and advance).

Regardless, the U.S. controls its own destiny. If England gets 3-points today, then the U.S. needs a 2-goal win to be assured of moving through; it can still move on with less than that, but it's not a sure thing. If England gets anything less than a win today, then the U.S. needs only to win by 1 to assure itself of going through.

espn just reported that the ref called a foul on maurice edu on the disallowed goal... fing ridiculous

Gomez had a nice run on the equalizer that pulled the defender back and created the space for bradley to sneak into. i hope he starts next game (much easier decision with findley out). probably see a combo of buddle/gomez

bob bradley made some interesting decisions in the first half that almost backfired. the edu for torres sub was crucial though edu looked very timid to start the 2nd half prior to his 'goal'.

i imagine the play of the subs may have gotten them into a starters role for algeria.

On Edu? Now that's just ludicrous. I guess he decided when he gave the FK that he wasn't going to let a goal be scored on the FK at all costs.

Maybe you don't give the FK?

Outside of the non-goal, I thought Edu looked pretty bad. Constantly giving the ball away and making less than crisp passes.

Findlay was timid too. Not going to miss him against Algeria.

I would have thought Michael Bradley being put in a 1980's style WWF bearhug would have been a foul too.

I think maybe I'm going to have to go back and re-watch the match and count up how many times we got called for fouls when we played the ball into the box on corners and FKs, vs. how many times Slovenia did, because it seemed to be a disparity to me.

there was an angle from behind the net that shows just how awful the call was...

edu shrugs off the slovenia defender as he gets in behind him, but there was no foul... he drops his arm below the defenders to keep from getting held up, and i can only guess the ref thought it was some sort of "swim" move... the replay from behind the net clearly shows he didn't grab, obstruct or otherwise impede the defender's ability to make a play, simply got inside of him...

save for a one giveaway, i wouldn't mind seeing feilhaber start in the midfield against algeria... seems to help control the flow better than torres and clark...
