That "tradition" started in the 1990's and hits 130ish decibels so you a) can't hear the singing and such from other countries and b) probably causes permanent hearing loss, which is why air horns aren't exactly welcome in the states anymore.

"Tradition" has to start somewhere, and the vuvuzela is relatively unique to South Africa. IMO, half of the world cup's mystique is that it is truly a global game, and the vuvuzela is a part of that. Those who selected South Africa as the host knew that the vuvuzela was going to be a part of it. I'm tired of hearing people complain about it. It's going to be played over the next month, and unless you don't want to listen to the World cup, get used to it.

Random (and maybe obvious) thought:

I find myself getting more and more excited for the North Korea-Brazil match. I guess because we're able to follow any level of any sport anywhere in the world, the novelty of having an unknown is really appealing.

You do realize that Kim Jong-Il is not going to play all 11 positions and score 14 goals, no matter what he told his citizens, correct?

US-England match did a 7.5 Overnight rating yesterday. Not bad I guess.

They were banned before 2008, when the South Africans convinced FIFA that it was "necessary" for the whole experience.

Go ahead and tell that to the Scottish, who have been banned from bringing bagpipes to their qualifiers.

While you're at it, let me know how many times you heard the Argentinian drums, the English songs, a USA chant, or anything from, I don't know, any other ****ing culture on the planet. I bet you BZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZzzz.

They've effectively let those stupid horns kill half the reason to watch the world cup, to see and hear how all the different fans act, so we can pretend that the games are occuring in beehives.

Next time it's in America, we'll just play canned pop music the entire match over the stadium speakers, since it's an integral part of our "culture". I'm sure everyone will be fine with that.

Echoing what Tyler and McCoist have been saying, the Germans look really good. That being said, I still give the Aussies a decent shot against Serbia and Ghana if they get their **** together.

But Dear Leader would never lie to us. :D

I'm not expecting them to be competitive or even score. But I feel the same way about New Zealand and I have no urge to watch their games. I will be watching the DPRK's first game.

Osli looks very, very good. Rumor is that if Arsenal loses Fabregas, Wegner wants Osli to slot in and not skip a beat.

I'm not trying to disagree with you in that it's not annoying. It is. However, it is part of the World Cup in South Africa...deal with it. I'm tired of all the complaining.

9.0 rating for the match itself.

That's about 10 million people. I've seen a lot of discussion that numbers would be skewed because of the amount of people watching in bars.

Yep, once you factor in people watching in bars, and those watching on Univision (another 5 mil at least I would guess), that's a pretty sizable number of people watching.

What joyful horn do the Brazilians have for the World Cup in 2014?

Wow. Harsh red on Cahill.

That was harsh on Cahill, he was probably due a yellow for persistent fouling, and a yellow for the particular foul, but you can't conflate the two into a straight red.
