That seems random! :D Why the hate for Ghana?

Then again, everyone has random nations they don't like. Mine is Hungary! :p

I think it was last world cup. The african teams are some of the worst when it comes to embellishing and Ghana is the king of them all. It's like they practice it. I'm not excusing the US or other teams from doing it but look at the germans and (when they make it) the russians. You rarely see it if at all.

Ghana pulled this crap against the US to waste time when they were beating them last time around. That was when I decided to hate them.

The African teams are the worst? ...

No way. The romance language countries are far and away the worst. Spain, Portugal, Italy, France...except for Romania. Well, maybe that's because they're the forgotten romance language. :p

Could be. I just remember ghana because it was against the US and it was beyond anything I had ever seen before.

Ghana was incredibly unsporting in the game against the U.S. They were doing literally anything to waste time. (That having been said, we were a little slow to start playing through their "injuries".)

Going into mathwonkland... I wish, and I don't have the energy to develop it, but if there was a decent way to benchmark the "reliability" of lesser matches (friendlies, minor cups, continential championships) in predicting world cup results or world cup + qualifiers.... particularly in light of Mookie's pool... I feel like if soccer wasn't so irregular I could game that system.

I think Nate Silver and Voros McCracken both have some idea about that. I know Voros has talked on BigSoccer about the extent to which friendlies are predictive of results in more competitive matches.

I missed that game, but I remember the talk about it afterwards now that you mention it.

To be honest I have less energy and enthusiasm to do these things since they take time, are not easy to put together, the data isn't easy to find, the theory doesn't come quickly, etc. Especially as in the end they don't usually go further than my own computer or a message board post.

US-England match did a 7.5 Overnight rating yesterday. Not bad I guess.

Random (and maybe obvious) thought:

I find myself getting more and more excited for the North Korea-Brazil match. I guess because we're able to follow any level of any sport anywhere in the world, the novelty of having an unknown is really appealing.

Germany-Australia should be a good match. I think Germany will play with a chip on their shoulder, much like they did in '06 when nobody gave them a chance. Interesting stats about Germany in the World Cup:

17 Appearances
15 trips to the Quarterfinals (Brazil has made 13 trips)
11 trips to the Semifinals (Brazil has made 10 trips)

The last time they missed playing in the QF was in 1950, when they were not allowed to play in the World Cup.

While it is very annoying, it is also a part of the South African soccer tradition. It would be like taking out the music and dancing in the stands in South America.

That "tradition" started in the 1990's and hits 130ish decibels so you a) can't hear the singing and such from other countries and b) probably causes permanent hearing loss, which is why air horns aren't exactly welcome in the states anymore.

Perfect yellow card for diving against Germany.

Any chance we can get these refs to come to the WCHA? :p:D:D
