Prediction for 2019: ESPN premieres its "40 for 40" doc, "Pariah: the Robert Green Story."

Re: World Soccer XIII: Through the Group Stages

I was interested by some of the things USA didn't do. (Deep balls into the attacking corners, to name one ...) Tells me they wanted to leave some tricks in the bag.

Hard not to say its a "meh" performance, but a draw with England is still historic. I don't see much football - so my frame of reference includes USA of the 80's and 90's - and its startling to see how far USA football has come in the past decade.

Re: World Soccer XIII: Through the Group Stages

Teams that lose (not a tie) the first game in this format have advanced 8% of the time. So as i said, all but eliminated. :p

I'm just saying that you have to let the games play themselves out. Weird things happen and teams that look great in the first game often fizzle and teams that start slow often end up in the semi-finals.

I would think Argentina has as much chance of ending up with four points as they do with nine points.

Re: World Soccer XIII: Through the Group Stages

that's a victory for us

Because of the way they played, yes. Real disappointed with overall possession, marking and lack of scoring opportunities. Wasn't the best the U.S. had to offer, but yes a point there is a steal when all said and done.

Well, it helps that their coach is a crazed druggie who wants to go streaking through the capital if they win.

I'd probably throw a game or two just to avoid that.

One thing I've learned about the World Cup is that first game performance has absolutely no effect on second and third game performance and no one's ever been eliminated after the first game.

Of the last 36 teams to lose their first WC match, 3 advanced past group play.

Re: World Soccer XIII: Through the Group Stages

So, before I keep paying attention, is this the US WC team that goes out after the 1st game and secures a bid to the knockout stage, or the one that blew their wad in one game and meekly go down to 88th ranked teams before taking an early flight home, because that seems to go back and forth. Which cycle are we on?

I was struck by how many throw-ins far into ENG territory in which they tossed the ball to double-coverage, with nary another teammate within receiving distance. I couldn't make up my mind if it was intentional or a tactical oversight.

'90 - lost 3
'94 - manhandled by Brazil after group play
'98 - I believe lost 3
'02 - beat Mexico, should have beat Germany
'06 - I believe lost 3
-'10 - ???

:)

Re: World Soccer XIII: Through the Group Stages

They keep telling me on TV how great our defense played. I ask, what defense?

Completely agree. In any event, if there's a 0-0 draw tomorrow, the US is in great shape. They should be pretty confident going into the next game.

Re: World Soccer XIII: Through the Group Stages

Good enough. Sure, the goal was a gift, but that's part of the game.

The withered husk of Jamie Carragher was lucky not to get a second yellow. I'd go to Dawson over him in a second.
