Re: World Soccer XIII: Through the Group Stages

I so wish I didn't have to go my fiance's brother's wedding. They owe me big time.

Re: World Soccer XIII: Through the Group Stages

are they any where i need to be? i suck at milwaukee

I don't know about "need to be", but they're both in pretty cool parts of town.

Nomad is on Brady Street, which has a lot of other restaurants and shops on it. It's a pretty active part of town, for a residential area. Its a very short walk from the Lakefront parks, which is a fantastic place for a stroll. This will also bring you pretty close to the War Memorial, Bradford Beach, the Art Museum, and Henry Maier Festival Park (Polish Fest is on the 18th through the 20th, Summerfest starts on the 24th).

The Highbury is on Kinnikinnic Ave. It's another sort of artsy, uptownish part of town that's not quite as nice as by Brady Street. Still lots of shops around there, and plenty of other places to eat.

I haven't been to either of these places, but they both have a good reputation. Everything I've heard says that The Highbury is the better bar, but Nomad is in a more interesting part of town. The Brady Street area gives you much better access to the Lakefront (partially because its right next to it).

Hard to imagine anybody worse than Joe Morgan...

Re: World Soccer XIII: Through the Group Stages

Looks like Motty (John Motson) won't be in South Africa for the World Cup. This will be the first one he misses in a long time ESPN should have hired him to do the cup.

Re: World Soccer XIII: Through the Group Stages

Tomorrow on ESPN Classic
2:30 – United States v. Mexico (World Cup 2002, Round of 16)
4:30 – United States v. Portugal (World Cup 2002, Group Stage)
6:30 – England v. Argentina (World Cup 1998, Round of 16)
8:30 – United States v. Colombia (World Cup 1994, Group Stage)
10:30 – Argentina v. England (World Cup 1986, Quarterfinal)

All times Eastern. Definitely going to record a couple of those. I've never actually seen that 1986 match in full. I also love how they're showing 3 US wins and two crushing England losses.

Must be the ref that tossed out Rooney in 2006 is now programming ESPN Classic. :D

Re: World Soccer XIII: Through the Group Stages

How could anybody not understand what a tie is? Seems like he just didn't like the fact that soccer has ties...isn't that different?

Semantics...

You're right. Perhaps I should say "someone who doesn't understand the value of ties".

Honestly, though... people that hate ties with that much vitrol are often so stupid that they're really only a c-hair* above the ones that don't understand what a tie is. May as well lump those bums together.

* Thank you, slang thread.

The drug lords just announced that in honor of the game airing on ESPNCL, they're digging up the remains of Andres Escobar and shooting him again.

An update downloaded to my DirecTV receiver last night. We have a new channel: 106 which is ESPN3D. They are kicking off coverage with 16 World Cup games in 3D starting June 11. I'm sitting this out and will wait until the price drops and the technology gets straightened out, but 3D is here.

I'm not paying extra for a 3D TV until the technology is at the point that I don't need to wear special glasses.

Re: World Soccer XIII: Through the Group Stages

I'd throw out there that Marcelo isn't even the worst soccer announcer ESPN has given a paycheck to. Looking at you, Tommy Smyth.

If you don't want to read my venting, stop now.

I hate Tommy Smyth and everything he represents. I find it insulting that ABC/ESPN still feels the only real qualification someone needs to comment on soccer is a foreign accent. He doesn't understand the tactics or the interplay between positions. He doesn't even understand the basic rules of the game. He sucks.

Re: World Soccer XIII: Through the Group Stages

Ideally, there wouldn't be any ties, but I understand soccer is different in that it's often a struggle to score, so you can't play forever.

That being said, I have a very difficult time getting behind penalty kicks deciding winners.

Take a player off every 5 minutes.

It would be fantastic if there was video of the 1950 game, but I guess that isn't likely.
