Re: World Soccer XIII: Through the Group Stages

Speaking of Rooney, I had never seen this before.

Re: World Soccer XIII: Through the Group Stages

And now for part two:

Group C:

As geeked as I was about the USA being drawn with England in the World Cup (I claim English descent - well, more specifically Cornish), I and many other will have to put those secondary allegiances aside. However, the good news is that their being in the same group makes a meeting in the knockout phase, where even more will be on the line, relatively unlikely.

Fun statistic: The United States has a decent record of 1-1-1 in opening group games against teams not starting in 'Cz' (and the loss was to Germany). England's is 2-0-1 and includes not particularly impressive wins over Tunisia (2-0 with the second coming late from Paul Scholes), a draw with Sweden and 2006's dour 1-0 win over Paraguay.

Further, the English haven't played terribly well in the last few weeks and are bound to be suffering a little in the cohesion department while plugging in a new captain. If we are to get them, this is as good a time as any.

I see Saturday's game being rather tense and not particularly fun to watch in the first half-hour, but I think the USA will get the first goal. England will sputter well into the second half until the USA's defense springs a leak again and they get an equalizer around the 70-minute mark. When all is said and done, England won't get enough going to get a winner, no matter how hard the USA tries, and the match will end in a 1-1 draw.

As for Algeria and Slovenia, I'm going to peg that one for a draw too.

In Round 2, both England and USA play significantly better and pull out 3-1 victories, with England's against Algeria looking a tad more impressive than the USA's.

Less fun fact: The USA's record since 1990 in their final group game: a miserable 0-5 (Austria, Romania, Yugoslavia, Poland, Ghana). I fear this is going to be a very difficult game for the US. I expect them to suck and trail for a significant portion before hauling themselves up by the bootstraps to win 2-1. Unlike their previous opponents in those pitfalls, Algeria's not good enough to hold them down. England, meanwhile, cruise past Slovenia 3-1 and win the group on goal difference.

Predicted Standings: England 7 (+4 GD), USA 7 (+3 GD), Slovenia 1, Algeria 1.

Group D:

There has been much ado about this being the Group of Death, but in reality, I think it may be the Group of Overrated.

Australia was a nice story the last time around, but they are too old to run with this bunch. Germany have too many injuries, no keeper and are too young. Serbia utterly folded when faced with a tough group last time around. Ghana is missing its best player.

Round 1: The Serbians begin another tour of disappointment, as a decent, but not fantastic Ghana squad wins 2-0. The Soccerroos can't keep up with what German quality is available and lose by the same scoreline.

Round 2: Plays right into Germany's hands. IIRC, both teams will try and play big and strong and physical and the Germans are just better at it. Germany wins comfortably. The Soccerroos, knowing that their tournament is on the line, give Ghana a good game, but lose on a late goal.

Round 3: Ghana outplays Germany thoroughly, but in that way the Germans always seem to do, they salvage a point. Australia and Serbia play a meaningless 1-1 draw.

Predicted Standings: Germany 7 (+3 GD), Ghana 7 (+2 GD), Australia 1, Serbia 1.

And now for part two:

Group C:

Predicted Standings: England 7 (+4 GD), USA 7 (+3 GD), Slovenia 1, Algeria 1.

Group D:

Predicted Standings: Germany 7 (+3 GD), Ghana 7 (+2 GD), Australia 1, Serbia 1.

Again, nice job. I appreciate the effort.

A couple thoughts on Group C.

First, I think if I was capable of looking at this in a completely neutral manner, I'd pick England and Algeria to go through. Algeria is scrappy, pretty solid and probably more creative than most people think. They will be a challenge for our back line.

Second, It would be awesome to beat or even tie England, but I think the boys need to stay focused on beating Slovenia and Algeria. That's how we'll get through the group. As most of you know, when it comes to a group format, not all wins are equal. If we beat England and lose to one of the others we are probably out of the tournament, but if we lose to England and win the other two we are through. We need to keep our eyes on the prize, so to speak, and concentrate on beating Slovenia and Algeria. Gooch and Josie can rest Saturday as far as I'm concerned. This is a marathon, not a sprint.

Group D

This is a crazy group because anything can happen. I know Ghana is young, but I have a gut feeling they are going to be the Cinderella of the tournament. If they can even get through the group stage. My prediction here is that Serbia and Ghana go through. The German chemistry just isn't there. The intense German soul-searching after going out in the group stage would also be great drama for the next few years, if you're into such things.

Re: World Soccer XIII: Through the Group Stages

You do know Manchester United fans have done the same thing, right?

Some idiots don't speak for everyone. Even though the Manchester United fans that did it when Glazer took over did it simply because they were anti-American while the Liverpool fans did it because the American owners ran the club into the ground.

Re: World Soccer XIII: Through the Group Stages

Another reason to hate Liverpool.

Liverpool Fans Burn American Flag

Just to get this straight, a few Liverpool fans burn an American flag to protest the actions of a few Americans (their owners), and that's bad, but hating all Liverpool fans because of the actions of a few of their fans is good?

We should thank them. Another excuse to flog some tired nationalist cant for a few days until the real game starts. I'll bet somebody will introduce a motion in Congress to condemn it. Lots of posturing fun for all.

I did not know about the United incident. I totally apologize for that. I would be made if ANY group of fans burned ANY flag. I would be mad if City fans burned the UAE flag. I just wish they would have burned pics of Hicks and Gillette instead of the flag. I'm all for protesting, but it was a poor choice.

Re: World Soccer XIII: Through the Group Stages

Does Green Bay even have a bar that knows about the World Cup?
When I first moved here, i went to BWW and i sports center was showing the top ten and the #1 play was a soccer goal ( i think a euro final goal FTW...or something like that)..all i said was "wow! what an incredible goal"

A guy, I'm not kidding on any detail, slowly turned around on his barstool and gave me a double finger salute.

I was  and he pondered, "how can you like a sport that has TIES!?!"

My first sports moment in Green Bay.

I found this amusing... evidently a WBA supporter got bored.

Since I'm sure it'll get edited out in a few hours, I'll quote the amusing stuff here:

In the United Kingdom, the tune is played before football matches. West Bromwich Albion, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Chelsea FC and Wycombe Wanderers claim to have been first to play it. However It was later reported that Chelsea never actually sung the song. They simply did it to try and get a hold of the urban lowe class feel.[citation needed]

Many teams have tried to claim they were the first team to play 'The Liquidator' at their football ground including Chelsea and little pub teams like Wolverhampton Wanderers but the first to play it was West Bromwich Albion aka by far the greatest team the world has ever seen. If you dont believe this then you are wrong because Wikipedia says so and is the fountain of all knowledge

He must not like the NFL either. They have ties too.

Re: World Soccer XIII: Through the Group Stages

For the Wednesday June 23rd game, I'll need a place to go in Milwaukee. I'll be there for the Twins/Brewers game and am staying some place close to Miller Park. I'd like it to be close to AJ Bombers as well (giving that place a try). Unless AJ Bombers is showing the game in the morning?
eods, know of anything?

There's also some amusing stuff on Marcelo Balboa's page, which I'll paste in even though it's been there since yesterday so apparently nobody thinks it's worth the effort to correct:
Marcelo Balboa recently cut his hair so he no longer looks like a rock star. He donated his hair to charity. He is still the worst broadcaster in ESPN history, edging out Joe Morgan by 3 votes.
Also, from the "actual non-rumor transfer news" department, Fulham sign Philippe Senderos. Not a bad pickup for no transfer fee, certainly.
Does this mean I have to hate The Doctor too? :(
We get it. You like Doctor Who. NOBODY CARES.

Re: World Soccer XIII: Through the Group Stages

jmh, I was just trying to put some humor in the thread. I actually have friends are protesting everything British this week. (They are taking things waaaayyyy too far.) It's actually quite comical.
