Re: World Soccer XIII: Through the Group Stages

I think this thread should have all sorts of scores and stats. Sorta like the tv threads...if it's aired..it's fair game.

as much as you try to avoid...someone retweets, posts as a status...etc.

spoilers are becoming harder and harder to avoid reading.

Re: World Soccer XIII: Through the Group Stages

I think we all can agree on being South African fans on Friday morning :)

Video of the stampede incident this morning. Honestly, looks like there was plenty of stupidity to go around.

Re: World Soccer XIII: Through the Group Stages

And yet, I can almost guarantee someone will. Happens with pretty much every major event that isn't in prime time in the U.S.

I think it would be near impossible to avoid the USA/England result in case of an American win. Thankfully its on the weekend so not many people will need to ignore the result.

It looks like I'm going to be one of those people. I'm going to try my best, but I'm pretty much resigned to having it spoiled for me. And I'm honestly pretty okay with that.

Does anyone know if all ESPN radio stations will be playing the World Cup games? Or is it up to individual stations?

Re: World Soccer XIII: Through the Group Stages

Curious as to who people here view as their favorite? I should probably avoid SI and ESPN's pick, but I have to go with Spain.

I believe Brazil will win. It's weird to say, but their defense is just so solid it's hard to see them giving up many goals. And, they just might score a goal or two.

Otherwise...

I know people are dismissing Italy, but I think they still can't be overlooked. They put eleven pretty solid players out every time. Don't expect them to make a lot of mistakes. Except Guttuso.

I know Portugal's track record, but they are loaded with talent and could win it. I just have a feeling this year may be different.

I honestly thought Ivory Coast had a great chance to win it, but with the double blows of Sven in and Drogba out [or not at full strength], that's not looking like such a smart pick. Ghana remains the continent's best choice. They could go as far as the final.

The only other team I see with a chance is Spain.

Argentina is such a train wreck waiting to happen. So much talent, so much ego.

Re: World Soccer XIII: Through the Group Stages

Eh I don't really believe in that especially when you consider this group of Spanish players won Euro 2008...

The European Championships are a whole different ball game compared to the World Cup (especially a non-Euro World Cup). Different teams, different referees, different climate.

World Cup is a different animal. More pressure. More pitfalls.

And one trophy will not remove a century of underachieving.

Ironically I am not impressed with their defense as JohnN is. In fact the very reason the USA lost is they stop pressing Brasil for the second half. They tried to bunker which failed them dramatically.

If you attack Brasil and you don't relent, especially if you score first...you can beat them. But if you go into prevent mode all you'll prevent is victory.

I have 4 favorite teams in this world cup: the US, South Africa, France :o , and Uruguay.

That and I'd love to see South Africa win the opener if Nelson Mandela shows up as is rumored.

Obviously different, but I've even heard people say the Euro title is harder to win than the World Cup. Think I've read it on here too. I just don't think what this group accomplished on the big stage should be taken lightly.

Spain's underachieving history doesn't mean this team will do the same. Nobody is a lock and they are certainly one of the favorites. If I was forced to pick one team, I'd go with them. Based on what they've done as a group, not basing it on their country's history.

I actually think it will be Spain and England in the final.

Re: World Soccer XIII: Through the Group Stages

Seems like every is overlooking Germany. I know Ballack is hurt but they are almost certainly coming out of their group and then anything can happen.

The more I look at these groups, the more I see South Africa continuing the tradition of host nations getting out of the group stage. That leaves either Mexico or France out.

I think this is what I see (as of today). Plus some hopeful thinking on US outcomes in the later rounds. Not that they are impossible given the matchups, just that they are no better than 50/50.

A: France, South Africa
B: Argentina, South Korea
C: England, United States
D: Ghana, Germany
E: Netherlands, Cameroon
F: Italy, Slovakia
G: Brazil, Portugal
H: Spain, Switzerland

South Korea > France
England > Germany
United States > Ghana
Argentina > South Africa
Netherlands > Slovakia
Brazil > Switzerland
Italy > Cameroon
Spain > Portugal

Brazil > Netherlands
South Korea > England
United States > Argentina
Italy > Spain

Brazil > South Korea
Italy > United States

Brazil > Italy

Re: World Soccer XIII: Through the Group Stages

South Korea over England over Germany?

South Korea going to their first semi-final when not having bought and paid for refs screwing Italy and then Spain?

:D

If England can get past Germany, I do not see them losing to South Korea unless there are shenanigans.

I'm not putting anything past Greece. Those 1995 Devils on grass are not to be forgotten.

I just don't trust England. Much like others don't trust Spain.

The nice part is, I think we will know if Mexico is the odd team out in group A by Friday night. :D

I dunno I always thought Denmark (92) and Greece (04) were examples of how the Euro might be more suited for a Cinderella run.

Exactly. Cinderella runs don't happen often in the World Cup (West Germany in 54 is the only close example of a cinderella run). There are 208 National Teams, 204 entered qualifying for this World Cup, and 76 have played at the World Cup. 7 countries have won the World Cup (Uruguay, Italy, Germany, Brazil, England, Argentina, and France). Cinderella runs have been made to the Semis and such (South Korea, Bulgaria, Sweden, Belgium etc.), but never to a title.
