World Soccer XIII: Through the Group Stages

Re: World Soccer XIII: Through the Group Stages

Serious question.

What's the thread rules going to be on scores being mentioned during the World Cup?

Other than the US games (taking time off to watch live), I will have to watch all weekday games on DVR at night.

Just want to know if I should avoid the thread or not. :)

Avoid this thread. I am going to post live scores throughout the tourney.

Since pretty much everything's airing live on the ESPN family of networks, I'd say avoid this thread like the plague if you're worried about spoilers.

(Frankly, even if it was tape delayed...I'd still avoid it. What else would you expect on a forum devoted to sports?)

I plan to watch every game, and will be posting scores and reactions throughout. Unless we want to set up a separate thread for the games, I'd say avoid this thread if you don't want spoilers. Of course, even if we did set up a separate thread, it would probably still get spoiled in here...which kind of defeats the purpose. :p

Re: World Soccer XIII: Through the Group Stages

Robben is now a major doubt after limping off with a hamstring injury in the friendly with Hungary.

Huge blow to Holland if its the case.
I really really hope he somehow makes a miraculous recovery, he had two goals in that game and looked great. Drogba should be back though which is good.

I would say consider this thread to have an [R] tag for those who are into that kind of jargon. Personally, I'd appreciate it if people would refrain from posting scores in other threads, since I (and presumably others here) use the board to waste time during the work day.

David Moyes writes about Landon Donovan

I especially liked this part:
Myself and the Scots in my backroom staff had plenty of banter with him and Tim Howard about playing against England. What could we do to help? I remember Tim lying on the treatment table, wondering how the USA could get a draw out of the game, and the Scots boys were in there working it out with him.

While I understand that to an extent...let's face it. This is the internet, which has the primary purpose of getting information across the globe as quickly as possible. Furthermore, this is a sports related website, and yes, while it's not a soccer site, nevertheless the world cup is big news.

Put it this way, while I doubt many people will mention things in other threads, if you stumble across something, especially if it's noteworthy, I don't think you'd really have anyone to blame but yourself. If you really want to avoid spoilers for tape delay purposes, well, coming here is kinda assuming the risk of being spoiled. (in essence, I'd just like to pre-emptively cut-off the inevitable "OMG WHYD YOU SPOIL THAT FOR ME" post that someone, not necessarily you, will post.

Re: World Soccer XIII: Through the Group Stages

This is exactly why I asked.

If we set the expectation that the thread will have scores in it, then no one can complain.

One of the things I love about European soccer is that I can still DVR a Saturday game, avoid this thread and Fox Soccer Report and watch the game on Wednesday and have no idea who won.

The World Cup is a different animal. I learned four years ago that it is tough to get through a day without casually hearing who won the morning games. I'd guess I heard who won at least 30% of the games I taped for Germany 2006.

Good Luck!

Re: World Soccer XIII: Through the Group Stages

I don't think anybody on either team (USA or Australia I mean) knows how to judge the flight of that ball yet. Time after time after time it was sailing over the heads of defenders, keepers, strikers who thought they were in the right place to play it. Are the ESPN commentators on a gag order not to talk about it? They kept blaming the sun for Hahnemann having trouble with high balls, even when the ball was coming from the side away from where the sun was setting.

The field looked crappy, and many of the problems with judging the ball seemed to do with looking into the sun, too.

It really shouldn't be an issue - MLS has been playing with the Jabulani all season, they've had time to practice with it.

I think Bruce Arena has the right approach:

It's hardly the first time World Cup players have griped about FIFA's choice of soccer ball. It was a topic U.S. Coach Bruce Arena refused to indulge on the eve of the 2002 World Cup.

Asked his thoughts at the time, Arena rolled his eyes and deadpanned: "It's a ball. Last time I checked, it was still round. If they make it square, I'll start to worry about it."

Re: World Soccer XIII: Through the Group Stages

So whats the starting XI vs England?

I'm guessing Findley and Buddle up front.

Findley struggles to finish, but his speed opens up the defense for other players. I think Bradley realizes that we score when we have pace up front with Davies/Findley. They might not be the ones scoring, but the ball ends up in the net when they are out there.

I'd normally take Altidore over Buddle, but I think Bradley feels Buddle is more of a mystery to English players and that might help. The English guys know Altidore and I don't think he scares them at all. A hot Buddle might be a surprise especially since Capello and the team are expecting Altidore.

If we set the expectation that the thread will have scores in it, then no one can complain.

And yet, I can almost guarantee someone will. Happens with pretty much every major event that isn't in prime time in the U.S.

Re: World Soccer XIII: Through the Group Stages

Games are on during the work day until approximately 4:30 ET. If people on here have the time and patience to DVR them and then watch all three after work...more power to you. It's simply unrealistic to think you can avoid the outcomes, whether it be here or anywhere else.

Curious as to who people here view as their favorite? I should probably avoid SI and ESPN's pick, but I have to go with Spain.
