World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

Good to see Leeds back in The Championship. They could go back to the The Prem if they make the right moves. Norwich will join them.

Cardiff got a huge away goal over Leicster and Forrest took a stunning 2-1 loss to Blackpool in the Championship playoffs.

Not as dire as it looks. Forest's away form was what cost it automatic promotion (exactly two points - draws at Bristol City and that club the board shan't let me name - outside the City Ground since mid-January), while its home form was what got it here (10 wins and a draw at the City Ground in the same span).

Wonder if the away goals rule counts here?

Mail rumor, so take it for what it's worth, but they might not have as much as cash as you think.

Sky Sports had the same article so I believe it. I think they will spend a lil bit.

Millwall fans are a bunch of nutters. It would have been fun to see then vs. West Ham. The New Den is an awesome place to watch a match from what I hear.

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

Seems like a really cool club.

Kind of surprised to see that there's a recent history of support between St. Pauli and Celtic.

Regardless of politics, it seems a little odd (from the description on their wikipedia page) that St. Pauli supporters would befriend supporters from a club known for sectarian violence.

Curious more than nit-picking....Isn't it a bit strong to say Celtic is known for sectarian violence? Not to say there haven't been significant issues between Celtic/Rangers fans but I hadn't thought it was to the point that the club was known for violence...so many of you have a longer span of time following the sport...without excusing the hoops/'gers issues, has Celtic been involved in other issues?

It might be a bit strong for me to say it that way without any qualifiers.

But the fact is that there are a fair share* of Old Firm supporters in both Glasgow and Northern Ireland that have used hooliganism as an outlet for the social/political/religious differences that exist in that region.

* Again: certainly not the majority, but a large enough number to not be ignored.

I'd like to see Forest promoted. I really don't have an English team, but if someone put a gun to my head and told me to support one, it would probably be Forest...mainly because I like their crest:)

Is the West Ham-Milwall rivalry as bitter as they make it sound in Green Street Hooligans?

I tried to acquire one last year and picked Arsenal, but it just wouldn't stick. It's hard to acquire teams (though with Portland moving up to the MLS next year I have one ready-made).

It would be fun to root for an EPL team, but it has serious AL East Disease.

I agree, its kind of hard to root for any team from England. I will root for NSC Minnesota Stars, because I enjoyed the Thunder games I went to. I root for Valerenga (Oslo) because I attended an entertaining game, they have great fans and a couple of those fans bought me beer. Osters IF (Vaxjo, Sweden) was my "hometown" team during my semester abroad, they are currently a bad team at the 2nd level of Swedish soccer, and Ajax I bought a cheap jersey, then attended an enjoyable game.

Possibly to irritate the Hamburg/Rangers coalition?

From everything I've heard, Hamburg might be worse than both Glasgow teams combined.

US 30-man preliminary roster to be announced tomorrow at 11 am Eastern on ESPNews.

Hoping for no Ching or Bornstein, confident we will get both Ching and Bornstein.

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

Still don't understand the negative feelings towards Ching; he's still our best target forward. Altidore is more explosive, sure, but his holdup play isn't as good.

I think that starts out with a shaky assumption though, namely that we need a "target forward".
Second, I watched Jozy at Hull this year, and I think he did a fine job of holding up play.

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

Oops, saw 11 and automatically assumed Eastern time, that was Pacific I guess.

So correction: 2 pm Eastern, ESPNews.

Whether we need one is a separate issue, of course, but if Bradley wants to have one on his squad (which is certainly not something that would be ruled out right now) then I think Ching is the best option.

But there are more important things going on right now...<object width="640" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/lfRTqF4JN-U&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/lfRTqF4JN-U&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="640" height="385"></embed></object>

That was a very good video.

Of course, I couldn't see all of it as the reflection of the 1982 European Cup (VILLA!) got in the way, but here's hoping your quest for silverware ends better than Boro's did. :D :D
