World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

I have a feeling it will be NYC. Maybe Brooklyn? I could see them developing a rivalry like in LA: the Galaxy for the suburban/white people, Chivas for the immigrant community.
Unless they want to play indoors at the Barclays Center once that gets built, I don't know where in Brooklyn they would find space for a stadium. If it were going to be in NYC it'd almost have to be towards the eastern parts of Queens (maybe near Citi Field, especially if the rumors that the Wilpons are interested in ownership turn out to be true, though I have no interest in seeing those idiots own another team) or up in the Bronx.

Or you should move to somewhere more civilized.

Why don't you do this for me? It ties in with the Hinterlands reference.

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

Hard to imagine a more soccer-mad, but still white, market than Portland. The Timbers play in a depressing (though easy to get to) venue that's always full and rocking.

I assume it's too much to ask for a nice building for the 2011 expansion franchise.

Not too much to ask for at all. They're kicking the minor league baseball team out of PGE park and reconfiguring it by adding seats, some luxury boxes, and some other amenities. The place will be shared with Portland State Football as well.

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

There are a few stories (here and there) on Montreal's expansion announcement, and several of them include quotes from Garber about #20, and I'm slightly surprised to see that NYC #2 is getting the nod ahead of StL.

Since most MLS teams seem content to rip off common European names for their teams... may I suggest New York City FC? Or, to be consistent with the other corporate whore in town: New York Citi FC?

Why curse the team from the start? We all know what happens to teams with the name CITY in them! :D :D

They need to be the New York Cosmos. End of discussion.

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

After a ridiculous free kick decision leads to a quick free kick (where the guy was completely offside) to a corner, Real Madrid takes the lead against Atletico Madrid.

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

Yet another reason to hate Real Madrid.

Clash:Benzema and a Atletico player go down injured.

Real Madrid keeps on trying to score, then AM finally gets the ball...and RM wants THEM to put it out.

5-1 now, empty netter, basically.

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

Real Madrid have no class.

That's not really a big deal to me for them not playing it out, its just the hypocrisy for asking for them to play it out after trying to score while the players were injured.

Wow, so now seeing the highlights, the ref sent off an AB player for an unintentional handball for a shot going wide and gave the penalty.

This was in the 20th minute.

This wasn't AM, this was Atletico Bilbao. Announcers never really said until the end of the game.

First, nothing has been decided about expansion with any finality.

NYC2 would be ahead of St Louis for several reasons: A potential ownership group of the Wilpons and partners will have more money than Cooper's group in St. Louis. The stadium situation in New York is the biggest question mark, but St. Louis' stadium plan is way out in the boonies. Given the relative successes of teams in urban areas (DC, Seattle, Toronto, etc) at drawing fans and the relative failures of those out in the sticks (Dallas), that's a big selling point.

St Louis brings little to the table in and of itself, so it would have to have a knock-out bid to win. They do not - not even close.

And then there's this:

Bilbao uses the English "Athletic" rather than Atletico. The teams were originally affiliated but haven't been for decades. The easiest way to tell their home kits apart is that Madrid wears blue shorts and Bilbao wears black.

Ah, thanks.

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

I think you had the same problem with the southeast...so as much as MLS wants to have a team in southeast, Florida, Atlanta and Birmingham don't really seem like good ideas based on the MLS summer schedule.

True, and the only Dome stadiums in the area is just the Georgia Dome in Atlanta. Could stretch it and count the Superdome in New Orleans as well, but who knows if they have anybody interested in starting a MLS team there. And I just don't think it would really be that viable to either Birmingham or somewhere in Florida to build an indoor stadium thats probably not sitting more than 30,000. Even if they could partner it with a college team, say like UAB for Birmingham, it would still be a stretch.

Although, I could see an use for say a 20,000 seat Indoor Stadium in Alabama, but that's another thread all together. ;)
