World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

Gotta be St. Louis if there's a good ownership group there.

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

Thats the problem though. Had the Thunder been better supported they could of moved up to MLS instead of being disbanded.

I really enjoyed going to Striker and Kicks games back in the good old days of indoor soccer.

I finally went to a couple Thunder games last season, and enjoyed them a lot. Although the Thunder disbanded, NSC Minnesota Stars has taken their place in the same league they would have been in. (USSF Pro league 2 or whatever its called now)

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

If a team can play outdoors in Houston, it could do so in Phoenix. And of course if the D-backs play a whole summer of baseball in Phoenix, then MLS certainly could also. I think a deal with the D-backs to use their retractable dome stadium makes more sense than Glendale. You play inside the dome, you don't worry about hot weather. Certainly summer weather is something that has to be dealt with, but it certainly could be.

I'll defer to you as the local on the climate, but playing at a baseball stadium would be a big mistake, IMO.

First, I doubt MLB would go for it. They practically tried to kill DC United when they had to share RFK with the Nationals for a few seasons. Only DCU's seniority helped keep things modestly appropriate.

RFK was also designed as a multipurpose stadium - I would think the soccer sightlines at the BOB would be horrendous. I just don't see how you'd make it work logistically, yet alone getting a club in position for financial success.

--------

St. Louis has had bids out there for expansion before, and they've been passed over multiple times.

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

Houston and Phoenix's climates are so incredibly different.

Not only is Houston usually at LEAST 10 degrees cooler than Phoenix, the humidity makes athletics significantly different.

Now neither place is comfortable, but Phoenix averages over 100 for three months while Houston averages 93. That's a large difference.

I'm pretty sure the Houston comparison was to adding a team in the southeast: Birmingham, Atlanta, Florida...not to Phoenix. I have not heard Phoenix mentioned as a possibility according MLS :p

It was a response to BG's claim that Houston and Phoenix have similar summer temps.

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

Does anyone have an idea who is behind the particular city bids? I don't think NYC can handle a 2nd team until the Bulls consistently sell out.

Although, my dream is still to have the Rhinos in MLS. If we can win the Open Cup, we deserve a shot.

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

I thought Beckham's contract promised him ownership in team #20?

I have a feeling it will be NYC. Maybe Brooklyn? I could see them developing a rivalry like in LA: the Galaxy for the suburban/white people, Chivas for the immigrant community.

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

Recent successes (Seattle, Toronto, and proven USL attendance successes in Montreal and Portland) show a shift towards urban audiences away from suburban soccer mom and team kinds of audiences.

Hard to imagine a more soccer-mad, but still white, market than Portland. The Timbers play in a depressing (though easy to get to) venue that's always full and rocking.

I assume it's too much to ask for a nice building for the 2011 expansion franchise.
