It was a Homer Simpson quote re: Marge not believing the late Earl Warren was a stripper in his spare time. Your "grabass" comment made me think of it. Had nothing to do with the substance of your statement.

OK. Next time be way, way, more obscure. :)

Re: World Soccer XI: To South Africa, and Beyond!

I know both Italian football and Roma are objectively unlikeable, but I need to give a shoutout to my boys.

Up 4-1 right now in the 85' against Palermo, Roma have not lost since October. With this win, Roma will nudge ahead of Milan for second (Milan have a game tomorrow), but they are comfortably in place for a Champions League appearance (no one is catching Inter). For a team that was in such disarray, this is a fantastic season. I still want Rosella Sensi to sell the **** team, but oh well.

And how good is Roma's run of form? John Arne Riise has scored three goals in four games, and Totti has missed much of the season.

Re: World Soccer XI: To South Africa, and Beyond!

Amazing how playing a team three levels down will make you look good.

Re: World Soccer XI: To South Africa, and Beyond!

And the FA Cup Quarterfinal draw:

Chelsea vs. Manchester City/Stoke City (replay in Stoke-on-Trent)
Fulham vs. Bolton/Tottenham Hotspur (replay in London)
Reading/West Bromwich Albion (replay in West Bromwich) vs. Crystal Palace/Aston Villa (replay in Birmingham)
Portsmouth vs. Birmingham City

(all replays Wednesday 2/24)

Re: World Soccer XI: To South Africa, and Beyond!

Freddy Adu had the GWG for Aris Thessaloniki today, and Jose Torres scored for Pachuca.

Re: World Soccer XI: To South Africa, and Beyond!

Not sure when aston villa last scored a goal that wasn't off a set piece...barely got out of London today. Two terrible offsides calls didn't help their offense but they need to score some goals in the course of play.

Heskey doesn't have a glass jaw, he has a glass body. Paris hilton would get hurt less often.

Boy... did Pompey need that W (and subsequent home tie vs Birmingham City, or what?? Hemorhagging cash like mad and potentially facing liquidation, that money will come in quite handy.

Re: World Soccer XI: To South Africa, and Beyond!

Didn't realize there was a soccer thread here. Sweet.
I'm a Manchester City supporter, already beginning to tire of Mancini's tactics.

I'm also a big US supporter, rational 99% of the time. Except when it comes to Freddy Adu, I'm an admitted apologist. I think he definitely should be called in for the Netherlands friendly.

Villa has the 2/24 game above and then the Carling Cup on the 28th...that is a lot of extra soccer for a team that faded due to lack of depth last year. If they wear out the midfield or Dunne then they will suffer a similar fate this year.

They have no hardware of late so I'm sure they want to win, but they are already down in 7th, a fade could dampen a lot of progress made to date.

Re: World Soccer XI: To South Africa, and Beyond!

So MLS labor negotiations were pushed off, first from the 1st until last week, then back to the 25th.

Is the delay a sign that nothing's going to happen, or a sign that they're just going nowhere?

I think the 2nd push back was due to the snow that hammered the East Coast recently. I think they are certainly closer now to a deal than they once were, still with some of the parties involved, I won't count on a deal 'til it's done.

Re: World Soccer XI: To South Africa, and Beyond!

What's with the CL matches being staggered across two weeks?

So I've bet on Aresenal today straight up at FCP and also took the under at 2.5. I know they are on the road, but Porto has lost their last two at home to English sides and Aresnal seems like they're in good form. Anyone disagree with that bet?

Wanted more fans to be able to watch, instead of having to choose between 1 of 4 matches, now you only have to choose between two.

The refereeing today was utterly atrocious by the way.

Turns out Porto disagreed.

Re: World Soccer XI: To South Africa, and Beyond!

Togo had their appeal on the 2012 ACN ban heard by the international sport court.

Yeah, it was denied. People are freaking stupid.
