Re: World Soccer X: Duh, duh, duh, duh...The Champions!

Taking a guess at how the pot might be seeded (combine CONCACAF and AFC as well as NZ, Africa, and non seeded South Americans) I would say our ideal group would be South Africa, Uruguay, and Slovenia.
I'm not sure I want to get put in a group with the host again. It's a pretty massive home advantage and they tend to get some friendly officiating, as I recall from being in the group with South Korea in 2002. Who will the seven seeds be? Brazil, Argentina, Italy, Germany, Spain (missing from 3W's list but I'm pretty sure they qualified)... Not sure who else. Don't think I'd want to be up against Spain out for revenge from the Confed Cup, that's for sure. Argentina, coached by clueless Maradona? Interesting possibility, but they sure do have a lot of talent.
He should decline to play in the WC.
Yes, because that's what every other player who's been the beneficiary of a blown call has done, right?
I'd gladly give anything to see Celtic or Rangers offer up a friendly against whatever team he's playing for now with the stipulation the game is played at Celtic or Rangers. I know that's Scottish but I don't care.
I have to imagine that Rangers (being Scottish Scottish people rather than Irish Scottish people) wouldn't mind him too badly.

There are times when I'm not so sure that Celtic and Rangers are aware of the fact that they aren't in Ireland. Especially Celtic (as jmh pointed out).

Yes, but the wanna-be Irish people would boo him for screwing over Ireland.
The wanna-be English people would hate him for being French.

I don't think he gets a fair shake either way.

I think there are probably a lot of Scottish people who would be annoyed at you for suggesting that the only two possibilities are "wanna-be Irish" and "wanna-be English". :p

Yeah... but they're Scots. What are they gonna do?

Yeah, but they're the people who root for Aberdeen, Dundee United, Hearts, Hibernian, Motherwell... They'd probably agree with me. Then beat me up for rooting for Celtic.

Maybe if Ireland had any elite professional teams worth a crap it'd be more fun that way.

Probably suggest to the Irish and English that they should all just grab him and have a Tug of War with him. The English get the right leg, The Irish on the left leg, and the Scots take the head. :D

Bagpipes. In your ears. All day long.

Re: World Soccer X: Duh, duh, duh, duh...The Champions!

Can someone explain to me how the World Cup draw will work?

Pot 1 will be the seeds, this is guaranteed. The seeded teams are South Africa, Brazil, Argentina, England, Italy, Germany, Spain, and either France or Portugal (I think France).

Assuming they don't do something crazy like engage in further seeding of the draw...

Pot 2 will be the unseeded European teams, this is also guaranteed as there are exactly eight of them.

Pot 3 will MOST LIKELY be the three unseeded CONMEBOL teams (Paraguay, Uruguay, and Chile) and the five unseeded CAF teams; the only one that doesn't really belong there is Algeria, otherwise the competition is relatively even.

Pot 4 will MOST LIKELY be the three CONCACAF teams and the five AFC teams.

Pots 3 and 4 have not been confirmed officially, if they want variety from the last WC, they'll swap CONCACAF with unseeded CONMEBOL, if they want to come about as close as is possible with geographic pots to even strength pots, they'll stick with what I have above.

Re: World Soccer X: Duh, duh, duh, duh...The Champions!

The Henry handling is a great advertisement for the goal area officials, as that official would have had a better view of the play than any of the regular on-field officials. As someone pointed out on another board I read, it wouldn't have been easy for the AR to see where Henry was wearing a dark shirt against the dark stands.

and we are crossing our fingers that we are in the pot 3 instead of CONMEBOL...

Wouldn't mind getting put with England or France/Portugal. Germany, they're solid but at least they're generally not divers. Of the likely pot 2 teams, anybody but the Dutch, who are, IMO, head and shoulders above the rest (including even the unseeded one of France/Portugal).

To be honest the referee didn't have great positioning. He should've been deeper in towards where the ball was going to land, not standing out at the top of the penalty arc. But it was extra time, he was definitely tired, and he probably didn't want to get caught down field.

Re: World Soccer X: Duh, duh, duh, duh...The Champions!

As a lot of you know, I tend to look at things a bit unconventionally.

When I look at the draw for the US, I don't think it matters which "Pot A" team we draw. I don't see us beating any of them except South Africa and, as a host nation, I think RSA sucks a lot of points out of the group in its three games.

The big question is who the next team in the group is. We always seem to struggle against South American teams and the sub-Saharan teams on "home" soil are all going to be very, very, very tough.

I guess the best case scenario would be to end up with a weaker European team and an Asian/OFC team. Otherwise, I guess we can pray for Algeria, maybe Uruguay or Maicon and Dani Alves finding a US passport in their luggage.

Not worth reading too much into with the B team we sent.

I disagree. Unfortunately, this was closer to an A team than a B team. I understand Dempsey and Donovan were missing, which is huge, but that was basically our attack and defense out there. Altidore looked like he always does without Davies at his side and minus Onyewu our defense is, well I can't think of an adjective for our defense.

We have no depth and the two games this week showed that. As I mentioned a month ago, our starting eleven is pretty good, but after that it gets real thin real fast. I try not to get negative about this team. The Confederations Cup was so impressive and a reminder to me that they are better than I think they are. Go USA!

On a side note, I had adopted Slovenia as my underdog team back in 2008 and was on pins and needles yesterday. I can't believe they got through!

As for France, Henry makes me sick, as usual, but I watch soccer for the entertainment value and with France and Portugal through, the World Cup will be much more entertaining, so I'm happy. Maybe Zidane will come back and cold-cock some guy. Of maybe he'll play for Algeria...

Re: World Soccer X: Duh, duh, duh, duh...The Champions!

I want France and Algeria in the same group. Oh yes, there will be blood.

What's that gagging noise emanating from Central America? Oh, hi Costa Rica.
