If the France goal was disallowed and the match ended with Ireland winning 1-0 what would have been used to determine which team advances to the World Cup?

Both teams would have won 1-0 on the road so the road goals tiebreaker would have been tied.

They were also offsides...

I hate appearing as if I'm supporting this crappy Henry goal. I'm not, but in fairness, after seeing the replay, it probably wasn't offside.

espn broke it down as offsides yesterday afternoon...I was watching sportcenter highlights of all the qualification matches...

??

I would assume all 32 teams at the WC will have new jerseys.

Of course they'll all have 'new' jerseys, but none of the other iconic jerseys actually change that much. When I see Argentina, I know that's Argentina. When I see Brazil, I know that's Brazil. Little details may change, but the basic pattern is the same.

The US, on the other hand, doesn't have a hint of continuity. Hell, we can't even keep the color palate the same.

They show it around the :09 second mark. Henry is clearly onside and the offside guy, #17, does make a play at the ball, but doesn't touch it. I know you could argue he interfered with the play, but honestly, this type of interference is rarely if ever called offside by FIFA-level referees. The denied penalty against Anelka a few minutes earlier is far more likely to be called at this level.

Can we just pick something and stick with it, please? I like the current whites.

Pretty much every national team in the world is on a two year refresh cycle for their kits. The U.S. appears to have pretty much settled on white as the primary kit and blue as the secondary (unfortunate, I'd prefer red). It was a given that we (along with everyone else in the world) were going to have a new design for the World Cup. I wouldn't say I'm blown away by the leaked kit (in particular, I could do without the grey sash), but it's decent.

Right. But we don't really refresh. We start over.

And no, not everybody in the world has a new design. Argentina will not have a new design. They'll have the same basic design with a few changes to the trim or other minor details. I can tell you already what Brazil's basic design will be. Same with Germany, the Netherlands, or any number of other countries.

"White" is not a design. And I like the white look for the primary kit, as well as blue for the secondary. I, too, would prefer more red, but hey.

Re: World Soccer X: Duh, duh, duh, duh...The Champions!

I see where Blockski is coming from and I agree with him. "Hey, look everyone, now our home kit is white with horizontal stripes and our away kit is gray" is good for selling product, I guess, but not for cultivating a consistent visual identity.

I was a big fan of the '95 design after I got used to it. Notwithstanding the terrible result, the '98 design is probably my favorite to date. Definitely would prefer using a solid red home design and white for the road.

The white with gray sash, I can go for that one. The red with blue sash, eh. The blue with white sash has to go.

But I'm with blockski. Let's get a general color set down.

Harkes interviewed Onyewu at the LA-Houston western conference final, Onyewu didn't sound hopeful

****, well at least this team is only set to lose Bocanegra and Cherundolo (assuming Davies still has a future) for 2014. I'm starting to get really worried about this squad.

As to the kit, I prefer this one to the possible redesign. Ah well, could be worse...

edit: I love the title on the top of the ESPN page about this call, "Even SEC officials saw the Henry handball"

I think this falls under the category of what Craig described earlier as a mistaken application of rules. The referee in the Uzbekistan-Bahrain match made a mistake about what ruling he's supposed to make when a particular incident (player enters box before penalty kick is taken) occurs. The referee in this Ireland-France match bungled a ruling as to whether a particular incident (offsides, handball) occurred. It seems to have been a blatantly wrong decision, but you open yourself up to a zillion such appeals if you allow teams to seek and obtain redress for mistakes of fact (as opposed to mistakes of rule) by the referee. What if the referee and assistant make a blatant error about whether a ball has gone into the net? (A couple of years ago, Fulham scored a goal that wasn't allowed even though the replay showed that the ball was over the line by a solid foot.) What about obvious dives? Where do you draw the line? I mean, assistant referees blow offsides calls all the time; does it really make sense to make that reviewable because it came very late in an important match?

Re: World Soccer X: Duh, duh, duh, duh...The Champions!

That's no precedent at all. The Uzbekistan-Bahrain replay occurred because of a clear error with respect to the application of the laws—he restarted with a free kick after an infringement on a penalty, rather than ordering a retake. That's not an error in judgment, that's an error in the laws.

The fact is, however obvious the referee's judgment may appear to be wrong in the France-Ireland incident, this incident is just that: a judgment call. The officials either failed to see the arm-ball contact, or judged it to not be a foul. There is no precedent for awarding a replay on such grounds. In fact, FIFA considers the referee's judgment to be so sacrosanct, they will not overturn cards even when replay clearly shows them to have been improperly awarded (England's FA is pretty much the only ones who can get away with doing that).

The ball is floating in mid-air in this picture.

Re: World Soccer X: Duh, duh, duh, duh...The Champions!

The point of judgment is whether the ball-hand contact constitutes deliberate handling. Not all ball-hand contact is illegal. However obvious this incident may be, it's still a judgment call by the referee.
