Germany was never about one player. Muller played well, but he was not outstanding in one on one play. I can't say he wouldn't have made a difference with the goal differential being so small here in this game...but Germany rarely pushed forward with ferocity.

Tough to say. Mueller obviously would have made a difference, but I still think Spain had the stronger team.

I know spain has been great a possession all tournament but I certainly think Germany missed Mueller more in the midfield to possess and start attacks than you're letting on.

Schweinsteiger is more the rock when it comes to Germany's ability to hold possession in the midfield. Germany losing makes me automatically think he had a bad game, without having seen any of it.

But this is beside the point: I know an octopus that will be mercilessly slaughtered in the coming hours.

Edit: It should be noted, this is officially "The Sadness, part II" for me.

The octopus picked the flag on his left every single time. I'd have a word with the guy who placed the Germany flag on the right before I go after poor old Paul.

He's not a possession midfielder. :confused: He either plays as a winger, or as an attacking midfielder. He usually gets the ball out wide as a winger...it was up to Bastian to possess the ball and he stunk today.

Btw, the ref today did a GREAT job. Two non-calls for penalties, never let the moment get to him, refused to let anyone intimidate him.

If anyone is prepared for the world ending, I just did it. I praised the officiating.

I'm very excited to see a couple of teams that are willing to attack play in the final. I think Wesley Sneijder is just the guy this year. I think the Dutch win and Wesley ends up as World Player of the Year.

I agree that the referee did a wonderful job. If Hungary has any bridges left to name, they should name one after this guy. I still would like to see the Japanese guy do the final. Craig P., anyone in the rumor mill mentioning Nishimura?

I thought Puyol was going to be the goat after missing the best chance of the game up to his goal. Love him or hate him, the guy knows when to put one in. :)

Mueller was clearly missed in the midfield. The German midfield looked lost today. It's definitely the place Germany has the least depth. Where's Aaron Hunt when you need him? :D

Germany is probably going to be better in 2014 and 2018. :eek:

I'm not Craig, but he was the 4th official for the Uruguay-Netherlands match yesterday. I remember reading that that pretty much rules him out for the final. I don't know if that's a hard FIFA rule, or if it's just convention, but I think his chances are slim to none.

They're not always fouls. The original tackle is legal and fine, the issue was with his second leg he scissor tackled him to the ground which is what made it a foul, even though he got the ball.

The point I was trying to make is that the referee will 95% of the time give a foul when a player goes in two footed, regardless of if the player has won the ball or not, which is the proper way to do it I think.

Also the first final without a previous champion involved since 1978 (Argentina-Netherlands)

Pedro had that pretty massive brain fart at the end, but I thought he added a lot of spark to the match otherwise. Up until it the goal it seemed like Spain's game plan was "have Xavi and Iniesta knock it around for a while, give it to Pedro in one of the channels, have him dribble around a German defender, pass it to Xabi Alonso, let him shoot from the top of the box." A little strange, but I guess it sort of worked.

For what it's worth, I liked the 4-2-3-1 look though. Xabi Alonso and Sergio Busquets are going to diffuse a LOT of the other team's attacks.

Love this matchup in the final. Like I said before the semis, this is the two best soccer countries never to have won the World Cup. I think it'll be a great one. ¡VAMOS ESPAÑA!
