Re: World Cup Soccer XVII: There can only be ONE!!!11!!!

I've only recently started following international soccer, and for some reason I really like Portsmouth. Dunno why really.

And I'm a Revs fan as well of course.

If you like Portsmouth (or soccer in general), you should read Chuck Culpepper's "Bloody Confused: A Clueless American Sportswriter Seeks Solace in English Soccer"

Re: World Cup Soccer XVII: There can only be ONE!!!11!!!

Apparently they have the worst stadium in the entire Premiership, the only one without a heated pitch.

Re: World Cup Soccer XVII: There can only be ONE!!!11!!!

We missed English soccer's first official game this season:

Rabotnicki 0 - Liverpool 2.

Anytime you can get a big first leg win in Skopje, you have to be excited.

Ngog had both Liverpool goals.

Re: World Cup Soccer XVII: There can only be ONE!!!11!!!

I don't know, I could think of a few European teams who could have done with a nice long public humiliation when they got home.

Italy's 8 hours of shame would make for amazing television.
England's 8 hours would have depressed the hell out of everyone.

New York Cosmos Making a comeback?

Press release announces the start of an academy, with the ultimate goal of getting a Cosmos franchise in MLS.

In other MLS news, Kansas City looking to re-brand themselves

Awful, meh, awful, decent.

Well, NYC does have the size to support 2 MLS teams. I would think the problem would be finding a site to put up a second Soccer stadium there. It would work for a while having them share Red Bull Stadium, with perhaps having show downs between the two at Giants Stadium, but for long term success, they would need their own field in a different area of NYC. Maybe in Brooklyn or Queens perhaps?

The rumor mill has them being put in a new stadium built by the Wilpons (owners of the Mets) right next to <strike>Shea</strike> Citi Field.

Yeah, somewhere about there would be good. You got Citi Field, along with the Flushing Meadows Tennis complex. They'll be able to all use the same parking lots. And by looking at Google Maps here, I'm sure the Mets wouldn't mind an excuse to buy up the land that those auto scrap yards are at, and develop the area some more.

That's an interesting point, a second team could give them some more clout when it comes to getting the Iron Triangle cleaned up.

Plus, using a Cosmo Stadium to clean up that area would probably look good if NYC was to ever make a try for a Summer Olympics bid again.

Plus also perhaps a new subway line that streaches from Lagaurdia Airport to JFK Airport. Would just need to connect it into a few stations around the Citi/Cosmo stadium Area, the Flushing Meadows Tennis complex, and then Aquaduct racetrack as well before pulling into JFK. Then, if you got to make a connecting flight from one airport to another, you can schlep yourself to the Subway and just hop on a train to the other airport. And if you're stuck at one of those airports because your flight has been delayed or cancled, then you have a few options there of where to go to kill a few hours til your next flight.

I can see it now, a supporters section full of people in white coats and powdered hair chanting "Ext-ra Cris-py" every time the opponents give up a goal.

This could be the start of something. Walmart could sponsor a team called.... Sam's Club. The players wear jerseys that look like vests and the supporters greet the rest of the fans and give them smilie stickers. Of course the players only make $9/hr and turnover is 160%...but the stadium is huge and you can buy 14 hot dogs for lunch for only $15.

Eh, I wouldn't hold my breath. The combination of money and political will required to make this happen seem pretty unlikely to come together in the near future; there isn't even a train connecting LGA to the existing subway lines that are ~a mile away, trying to get one built clear across the island would probably be a fruitless undertaking.

Plus, now that I think about it, why would anyone think the Wilpons would be a good choice to own an expansion MLS team? They can't even competently run the one team they already DO own!

Re: World Cup Soccer XVII: There can only be ONE!!!11!!!

I'm a bit skeptical on another New York franchise. Let's see the Red Bulls get some proper attendances first.

Yeah, I would think that it would need to be something like around 10 years down the road type planning for a Cosmo's MSL team to happen. Perhaps they could kick around a few years in the USL perhaps, using Red Bull Arena, or perhaps some HS Football field in NYC. There's got to be at least one stadium there that holds something in between of 15,000 to 20,000 right.
